Anyone know how to shell them? I happened upon a grocery sack full on

my freecycle list (the person has a tree in their yard - the wonders

of southern CA!), but I haven't the faintest idea how to shell them!

Good luck! I hammer on the cement driveway......LOL

Believe me, that is the hardest shell I have ever

seen.

Hi,

I've never bought them in the shell

but seemingly you can buy macadmia nutcrackers

or you can find the right sized hole in the road.

See this page:

" * For successful shelling, the nuts should be

dried to a moisture content of about 1,5 % to ensure

that kernels shrink away from the shells. Therefore,

nuts should be dried before shelling. The final drying

takes place in large containers through which hot air

is circulated.

* The macadamia nut has a very hard shell, but is

easily cracked mechanically between rotating steel

rollers. A nutcracker or shelling machine works on the

principle that nuts are cracked between a rotating

steel roller and a fixed plate. The distance between

the roller and the plate is adjustable according to

the grading size of the nuts. The kernels of the nuts

that have been properly dried, drop from the shells

when the nuts are cracked. "

Have any rotating steel rollers around?

" Recommendations: suggest in-shell, cracking manually

in small quantities to insure freshness. An easy way

to crack macadamias: place a layer of in-shell nuts

between two layers of an old towel, on the floor. Use

hammer - tap lightly. The towel will hold the nuts in

place, while you crack them. "

Wow... no,no steel rollers around, unfortunately!! :-) But I will try

roasting them to dry a bit and see if that helps! Thanks for the great

links!
