Guest guest
I'm in college and taking a public speaking class. We have to do a persuasive speech so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to speak about the abuse that farm animals go through in the food industry since I have been a vegetarian for 8 years. I was wondering if anyone knows of any reliable resourses for information on this subject. Thanks.
Guest guest
Oliver Sacks - An Anthropologist on Mars. This book has a chapter about an autistic woman who tries to design slaughterhouses to be kinder to animals. She can't identify with people, but she can see things from the animals' point of view, so she tries to mimimize stress and cruelty for the animals. When she gives Sacks a tour of a beef processing plant she designed, they ate vegetarian afterwards. .... Be kind. Be of good cheer. Guest guest
Cyndi, I'm not sure if this will be helpful or not but there is a website www.farmsanctuary.org<http://www.farmsanctuary.org/> that is supposed to be educational on this subject I believe. I receive emails from them quite often. Maybe they have some info you can use. Good luck. Carrie - Cyndi<cyndi8300 < > Wednesday, February 15, 2006 1:46 PM help with speech please? Guest guest
That's awesome Cyndi! You might also want to look on the PETA website. My husband became a vegetarian recently and he said one of the main reasons was an arguement I used with him. Basically, if a more aliens who were more intelligent than people landed on Earth would they have the right to take our son, raise him in a cage and then kill him to eat him? I was more descriptive, but you get the point. Good luck with your speech!! Please let us know how it goes. Guest guest
I would read " The Food Revolution " by John Robbins and " The Mad Cowboy " both excellent reading material which goes into extreme detail about abuse and factory farming. Also watch PETA's video " Meet your Meat " which is always playing on their website. Cyndi <cyndi8300 wrote: I'm in college and taking a public speaking class. Guest guest
Jenny, I like your argument about the aliens. I've been looking for something good like that to use when people are heckling me about being veg. Thanks. I may use that next time. I wish my husband would go veg. - Jenny Rieck<jennrieck < > Thursday, February 16, 2006 7:56 AM Re: help with speech please? That's awesome Cyndi! You might also want to look on the PETA website. Guest guest
Not unlike War of the Worlds (the movie...yes, I hate to admit I rented it). How about Meat Market by Eric Markus. Here's a blurb from Amazon: Meat Market elevates the debate over animal agriculture. Erik Marcus exposes and clears away the exaggerated claims and counterclaims put forth by the meat industry and its opponents. In the process, Marcus presents a thorough examination of animal agricultureOs cruelties and its far-reaching social costs. Marcus then considers the discouraging progress made by the animal protection movement. He evaluates where the movement has gone wrong, and how its shortcomings could best be remedied. , " Carrie Kahl " <carriekahl wrote: > > Jenny, I like your argument about the aliens. Guest guest
" If a group of beings from another planet were to land on Earth -- beings who considered themselves as superior to you as you feel yourself to be to other animals -- would you concede them the rights over you that you assume over other animals? Guest guest
There was an episode of twilight zone or outer limits many years ago that was just like this. The super intelligent aliens came down and did all sorts of things to help end starvation and pollution and increase our food production. Then the aliens started shipping people off in their spaceships to " a better place " . Then some scientists found an alien book and were trying to decipher the written language. At first all they managed to figure out was the title " how to serve man " and thought it was a potical book. At the very end they found out it was a cook book and the space ships were shipping people off to the slaughter house. It totally creeped me out, though it was not until many years later that I became vegetarian and had a whole new appreciation for the episode. , " Carrie Kahl " <carriekahl wrote: > > Jenny, I like your argument about the aliens.
