Guest guest
Jeanne, 1st, how old is your baby? Honey is not recommended until age 2 b/c of the danger of an allergic reaction. Mine are almost 4, almost 3, and 9 months. For our 9 month old, we have always used rice syrup, and the other two like it as well. In fact, I love it too! It is milder than molasses. Different sweeteners have different nutritional qualities, and most vegetarian baby food or child focused cook books will tell you about the differences. We got turned on to the rice syrup from Dr. Sears (www.askdrsears.com). Egan couldn't tolerate the commercially prepared formulas so we have always supplemented breastmilk with goat's milk...you add the syrup to increase the carbs. He now gets that exclusively and he is a very healthy baby. He refuses most spoon food also. He will eat yogurt but that's about it. He loves all bread type foods. We give him big enough pieces to hold and gnaw on. He also loves fruit, especially bananas and mango. For slippery fruits, roll in toasted wheat germ or bran. His current favorites are pasta (over cooked to very soft) and french fries. I make the fries at home from Yukon gold and sweet potatoes. He pretty much eats table food, though he only has two teeth so we are still careful about choking hazards. HTH! Chessie On Behalf Of Jeanne Yacoubou Tuesday, February 21, 2006 7:34 AM Advice for a very picky 15 mo Hello Everyone! Our baby #3 is a very picky eater. He also has a sweet tooth that my other babies never had. We are lacto-ovo vegetarians. 1. What's the least refined sweetener you'd recommend? Molasses? Maple syrup? Honey? Are they all basically the same? Do you find rice syrup goes over well? 2. What are some easy recipes that your babies love? He insists that he will feed himself so I'm especially interested in finger food ideas (especially high protein ones), not spooned-in foods. Guest guest
Will he drink from a cup? My kids are now 4 and 2 but have always been big on smoothies, and you can hide just about anything in there. I rarely add any sweetener because the fruit makes it so sweet. Their current favourite is a mix of orange juice, bananas, cottage cheese, flax oil and liquid probiotics. We have a vitamix and it blends things so smoothly, sometimes we add nuts or flax seeds and you'd never know it. Something that came up for us when our kids were smaller is that if you try to buy organics, watch the organic cereals (a favourite baby finger food). They often don't have the fortification (iron etc.) that non-organic cereals have -- I asked about this a year or so back and was told that it was because the minerals etc. weren't readily available in organic form so if they added them, they wouldn't be able to label the product organic. When babies are eating so little you want to make sure everything counts! One other thing -- my understanding of the honey issue is that we delay introduction because of the risk that botulism spores may be present. I hadn't heard about the allergy issue related to that -- does anyone know more about this? Heather Jeanne Yacoubou wrote: > Hello Everyone! > > Our baby #3 is a very picky eater. Guest guest
Smoothies are a great idea! My little guy always thought that drinking out of a silly straw was fun. (Other) Heather is right - you certainly can hide just about anything in a smoothie! I'll freeze leftover smoothie mix into a small popsicle molds which makes an easy afternoon " treat " for kids. Also, I make tofu scramble quite often for my nearly-two-year-old. You just take a brick of firm tofu and mix it with a tofu scramble seasoning packet (found at any HFS) and then I saute it in olive oil. It's easy for little fingers to pick up, and you don't need teeth to chew it. He just loves it. The leftovers keep in the refrigerator for a few days. Good luck! Guest guest
Heather, I think you are right about the honey, it is botulism rather than allergy. Sorry, my mistake! Must be that lingering 4 am feeding that is muddling my brain today! Chessie On Behalf Of Heather Tuesday, February 21, 2006 11:20 AM Re: Advice for a very picky 15 mo Will he drink from a cup? Guest guest
Oh yeah, all of my kids love tofu scramble. That stuff is so good! It makes great breakfast burritos - wrap them in foil and refrigerate and they will keep for several days. I like to make a batch of that and some potatoes and wrap some up for breakfast throughout the week. I leave the baby's plain, but the girls like mushrooms added to theirs. And you can, of course, sneak in flax seeds. I can't get my girls to eat smoothies for some reason, but they love tofu pudding. Guest guest
Another one I just thought about is beans -- plain cooked kidney beans or any other soft beans are great fingerfoods. Bland, and very healthy. My guys also love hummus, which you can make bland or flavourful depending on your child. Their favourite is black bean hummus -- they sometimes just forget about dipping and eat it with a spoon. I was reminded of this because I opened a can of black beans to throw into something this afternoon and my 2-year-old ended up eating about 1/4 cup of them before I got them into my recipe! Since your son is over one year you could mix beans with lemon juice and add flax oil or any other oil and puree. Heather in Ontario (seems like there are a lot of Heathers on this list!) Guest guest
This is my suggestion and I have had 3 children, do not encourage the sweet tooth but, develop the child with vegetables first, if you can, carrots, corn, peas are sweet etc, if you do not teach them to love veggies young, it is harder later to do it, train a child in the way they need to go and they will normally come back to it, when they are older!!!! Guest guest
My understanding was that it was the botulism spores as well. I think that the age it is ok is actually younger than that as well but I don't remember for sure since my " baby " is now 4. I have never seen honey listed as a common allergen and i did a lot of reading on food allergies because my youngest had severe food allergies (which he grew out of!!!). Guest guest
You can make tofu scramble really quickly and easily (and much cheaper) by scrambling the tofu and then adding nutritional yeast, a pinch of tumeric, a shot of Bragg's or Tamari and a little garlic (but I love garlic). If your kids like veggies you can add mushrooms, broccoli, etc. Jacqueline C. > > HLANE > 2006/02/21 Tue PM 12:45:56 EST > , Heather <jhr > Re: Advice for a very picky 15 mo > > Smoothies are a great idea! Guest guest
.... speaking of rice syrup ... I recently began using Suzanne's Just Like Honey Rice Nectar, which I get from Pangea: http://www.veganstore.com/index-store.html? deptid= & parentid= & stocknumber=613 & page=1 & itemsperpage=12 Like the label says, I think it tastes just like honey. It has a nice thick consistency, very smooth, golden colored. Nice in tea, as well. And also, with carob powder and vanilla soymilk as Hot Carob Drink (an alternative to Hot Cocoa). For me, this is the perfect sweetner. (My kids prefer sugar.) Another option is Agave Nectar, which I have been using as a sweetner for about a year, and although I like the flavor, I find the consistency too thin for some uses (but just right for other uses). I also get Agave Nectar from Pangea: http://www.veganstore.com/index-store.html? deptid= & parentid= & stocknumber=840%20%20%20%20%20%20% 20LIGHT & page=1 & itemsperpage=12 - Alan , " Chessie " <vegetariyum wrote: > > Jeanne, > > 1st, how old is your baby?
