Guest guest
Not parent related, but spouse related. DH was diagnosed with diverticulitis today and I'm looking for some ideas to feed him without causing him pain. He is (should I say was) a big nut eater. We obviously eat lots of leafy greens and fruits but can anyone suggest colon friendly foods that I could give him? TIA Carole Mail Use Photomail to share photos without annoying attachments. Guest guest
Hi Carole, He needs to go low fiber and bland until the acute attack is over. Once the bowel is less irritated you can introduce foods that are higher in fiber a little at a time and see how they are tolerated. Its similar to the way you'd introduce foods after a stomach virus. You also want to make sure he's drinking plenty of water to help speed things through the bowel. Leafy greens and fruits are good but you'll want to peel the fruit for now as the skin will be too tough to tolerate. You may need to cook the greens to make them easier for him to digest. You're right to have him avoid nuts but nut butters may not bother him. Hope that helps a bit, Katie http://frugalveggiemama.blogspot.com Brings words and photos together (easily) with PhotoMail - it's free and works with Mail. Guest guest
My mom had this and then later colon cancer (she is doing just fine now though). Along with what Katie said, she also has to avoid seeds, even those in berries. She will make raspberry sauce and strain it and that sort of thing though. Mom also loved multigrain bread but again that was a problem so we found a multigrain with ground grains and she does fine with that. When I went to the surgeon because I run a higher risk of colon cancer due to my mom having it. He told me that eating a mainly vegan diet was the best prevention. Guest guest
I have a different colon disease, my life saver is rice. It's one of the only foods I can eat sometimes. -Lisa Katie Mangan <kmangan33 wrote: Hi Carole, He needs to go low fiber and bland until the acute attack is over.
