Soy Milk Sludge

We buy our soy milk from Costco as it is way cheeper than anywhere

else that we can get it. They used to carry silk brand but recently

they have been selling there own brand instead. It has a ton of sandy

sludgy stuff in it and no matter how well you shake you always get a

layer of the stuff on the bottom of the glass. As a result my

daughter has started refusing to drink it. I was thinking of trying

to pour it through a strainer for her, to reduce the " gunk " in it, but

I was concerned that the stuff I might strain out would contain a lot

of the nutrients, primarily the calcium. And, we cannot really afford

to switch brands. Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi Rachael,

If you have a Super Walmart near you they are now selling their own brand

comparative to Silk. Both regular and chocolate, about 60 cents cheaper a

half gallon if I remember correctly. There is no sludge problem that we

noticed. Tastes so much like Silk to us too.

Is there home delivery in your area?

One of the problems with these big box stores is that they necessitate a

car -- which may negate the savings from purchasing there.

If there is home delivery of organic/local foods in your area, maybe you

can save on the overall cost of soy milk by having it delivery and

eliminating what you are paying for driving to get it.

Oh I am sorry, I don't mean to be disrespectful, but where do you have to

live to get home delivery of organic foods? I'm lucky to have a few

organics at my local market and if I watch the sell-by dates carefully some

of them are actually still edible. Are you referring to Peapod or some of

the other online ordering services?
