Guest guest
Hello Everyone, Does anyone have any advice about B-12 for a vegan 14 month old? My son is still breastfeeding 5-6 times a day and at night too. He eats lots of beans, tofu, veggies fruit ect... He still doesn't like soymilk although I just bought a soymilk maker and just made a batch of soymilk... but it's not fortified like the store type. I take a multi-vitamin that includes B-12 but am concerned on whether he is getting enough B-12 (through nursing) or whether I should start giving him a supplement. Where could I find a b-12 supplement for him? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh he refuses to eat the fortified baby cereal anymore Tahnks Christine
Guest guest
http://www.veganhealth.org/b12/infants here's a link on studies re: b12 supplementation in infancy. the consensus seems to be that if he's nursing (and how awesome that you're extending!) and you supplement yourself, he should be ok. the only issue seems to arise when you are NOT supplementing. but he needs to be getting it in his own diet some time, of course. i have a son the exact same age and was just wondering this myself. but he drinks tons of enhanced silk and lots of other fortified products as well. have you worked with nutritional yeast? i make a chReese sauce for whole grain pasta a few times a week for lunches and he sucks that down and i know i don't have to worry about b12 when he gets that. we also put red star on popcorn, sandwiches, spaghetti, etc. we also buy a lot of our produce at the farmer's market, and if it's organic, we don't wash off the dirt. excellent source of b12! my son also will not eat the infant cereal anymore, but he will eat regular cereal. we have cascadian farms purely o's and also the various varieties of peace cereal around for snacks, and both are high in various vitamins including b12. (we don't buy any cereal with more than 2g sugar and that isn't whole-grain, and there are about a billion of these healthy cereals at health food stores.) have you tried using just a regular cereal instead of an infant cereal? Guest guest
Has he tried rice milk? We buy two different brands of fortified rice milk that contain quite a bit of B12 -- Ryza (made by So Nice) and Yu. Both say they contain 50% of the RDA per cup. The other thing I like about both those brands is there is no added sugar, even in the vanilla flavour, and both are organic. Guest guest
Christine, As long as he is nursing, and you are taking B12, he should be fine. You can muscle test him for any vitamin or mineral. If you have questions about this, you can email me. Laura in MD
Guest guest
Thanks so much for the link. I guess I forgot about nutritional yeast. I love it on toast with some Earth Balance margarine and so does my son. I tired making chreese sauce from scratch but it didn't come out very well it was kind of bitter but I bought a box of mac and chreese today so we will have it soon. We buy organic too and eat dirt and all! my son loves the Purely O's ans would live off them if I would let him. I will have to check some of the other orgainc cereals. Thanks! Guest guest
I'll give the rice milk a try. Thanks! Heather <jhr wrote: Has he tried rice milk? Guest guest
Laura, I've never heard of the muscle test but I would love to learn about it. Thanks Christine VAP79 wrote: Christine, As long as he is nursing, and you are taking B12, he should be fine. You can muscle test him for any vitamin or mineral. Guest guest
I give my toddler Redstar Nutritional Yeast flakes daily and he drinks Rice Dream milk enriched with B-12. I try to give him Vitamin B-12 supplements at least every 3 days because if I don't, he begins to stutter badly. After giving him the B-12 for 2 days, his stuttering disappears. - Christine Pensa Friday, June 16, 2006 12:55 PM Re: B-12 for vegan 14 month old I'll give the rice milk a try. Thanks! Guest guest
Hummm wish stopping a stutter was that easy for others that struggle with this. Interesting discovery you made on your little one. Guest guest
FWIW, I found the connection between B-12 and stuttering to be interesting, so I googled those words together, and quite a bit came up. Apparently it's a well-known connection, and can signal a B-12 deficiency, either from not getting enough or (more likely) having a malabsorption problem. You might want to ask your doctor about it. (Hopefully, s/he won't be the type to tell you the only solution is to feed your child animal products.) Liz
Guest guest
Wow - thanks for this. The connection was so obvious in my child's case that it is almost frightening when I observe it. I will try to google those words too. - ERB Saturday, June 17, 2006 11:58 PM Re: B-12 for vegan 14 month old FWIW, I found the connection between B-12 and stuttering to be interesting, so I googled those words together, and quite a bit came up.
