Guest guest
Behehehe... For my birthday a few weeks ago, some friends and I got together at Yuan Fu, a vegetarian Chinese restaurant. My omnivore husband wasn't thrilled, but he came along because I reassured him that my near-carnivorous cousin liked the food there, so there had to be SOMETHING he would eat. And indeed, there was. Everything. So now Father's Day is coming up, and we're going to be in that neighborhood for the weekend. What does he want to do for Father's Day? Sleep late, watch the ballgame... and go to Yuan Fu! Best fake-meat-specializing Chinese restaurant I've ever been to (and there are three in my mom's neighborhood, oddly enough). Great place to take meat eaters - the above-mentioned cousin has started taking his omni girlfriend there for lunches, too, since it's near where they work. The only problem for me is that I'm used to ordering THE veg entree on the menu, so I've forgotten how to choose food in a restaurant and it takes me half an hour to pick something. It's all good, anyway. (If you want the fake meat experience, definitely the " beef " with walnuts, and if you're looking for something more... vegauthentic? the tofu hot pot with ginger and basil is astoundingly fragrant and yummy.) If anyone's interested in checking it out, here's the info: Yuan Fu Vegetarian 798 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 (301) 762-5938 It's hidden in this teeny strip mall next to the Wendy's on the corner of Norbeck and 355, so if you find that, you're there. -- kt http://coffeeandcables.blogspot.com/
Guest guest
Thanks for the info. I live in Manassas, but I'm not above traveling great distances for veggie food! I actually go to the office in Rockville once a week, and I know there is a great veggie restaurant right at the White Flint metro. I've been there once, but haven't made it there since my office moved there. What are the other two restaurants in your mom's area? TIA Lisa , CMM <bokodasu wrote: > > Behehehe... Guest guest
Yuan Fu's and The Vegetable Garden (both on Rockville Pike and The Vegetable Garden is the one off the White Flint metro) are two reasons why I miss living in Rockville so much. Mary, the owner of Yuan Fu's remembers us when we come in once a year after not living there for 6 1/2 years. We used to live right near the Rockville Metro stop so Yuan Fu's was dinner a couple times a week. Okay, now I'm hungry! I live near the University of Illinois now and we only have ONE veg restaurant and it is only open during the school year for lunch and once in a while for dinner and is run by students. The food is good and pretty healthy, but it is nothing like having all the choices of the DC area. Linda , " Lisa " <lisaviafamily wrote: > > Thanks for the info. Guest guest
I guess I should be thankful. I always wish I lived in some Californian city or NYC where there are tons of options, but I guess DC is better than Illinois!!! We usually end up at Sunflower in Vienna if we drive anywhere. Can't complain about that! , " veganlinda " <veganlinda wrote: > > Yuan Fu's and The Vegetable Garden (both on Rockville Pike and The > Vegetable Garden is the one off the White Flint metro) are two reasons > why I miss living in Rockville so much. Guest guest
I just wanted to mention that despite being in Illinois, the vegan options available to me are plentiful. I should clarify that I live in the Chicago area, though, which has lots of vegan choices. In the rest of Illinois, I should say that a vegan would have pretty slim pickings, though. -Marla > I guess I should be thankful. Guest guest
Hey Linda, There should be more than one restaurant around Champaign-Urbana. I don't have it with me right now, but I remember that VRG's book listing restaurants included more than that. (Check the website!) You're about 1 1/2 hours from the south side of Chicago. There's a great vegetarian soul food restaurant right off the Dan Ryan (also listed in above-mentioned book): Soul Vegetarian East. And 10 minutes further north, you've got the U. of Chicago campus (lots of vegetarian choices) and 5-10 more minutes north of that exit, Chinatown. Be forewarned that there's construction on the Ryan right now, so time your trip for non-rush hour! Liz
Guest guest
It is kinda sad from the restaurant point of view, but the fun part is teaching vegan cooking classes and eating in more. I do miss Sunflower too...my husband and I worked together in Virginia for a while and would take all the meat-eaters in the office to Sunflower for #2 (was General Tsao's, but I'm sure they have changed their menu in the last couple years). Guest guest
Red Herring is the restaurant in all the listings and it is the one that is only open for lunch and run by students. Good food though. We do have Strawberry Fields which is a natural food store and has a deli, but there is only so much deli food one can stand. I can't believe I'm complaining about this, but Strawberry Fields also has vegan desserts so I hate going there with the kids since it is the only place with vegan desserts they expect them. We are 2 1/2 to 3 hours from Chicago and we have lots of friends up there so we go at least once a month. We always seem to end up at the Chicago Dinner, but I agree Soul Food restaurant is great. I'm also happy to go to the Ethiopian places. If only we could bike up there and not have to drive the car (ugh!) or take the train. I'll stop whining. :-) Linda , ERB <bakwin wrote: > > Hey Linda, > > There should be more than one restaurant around > Champaign-Urbana. Guest guest
General Tsao's Special! Yum! I always accidentally call it General Tsao's Balls! Haaaaaaa! You can understand the mistake since you've had them and know what they look like!! , " veganlinda " <veganlinda wrote: > > It is kinda sad from the restaurant point of view, but the fun part is > teaching vegan cooking classes and eating in more.
