Guest guest
It sounds as if you all have come to pretty much the same conclusions we have. We live in NW Florida at the moment. There is actually an old veg*n community here and it is growing. But most of the people we meet are older or younger without kids. So, the economy doesn't consider veg*n at all. Living around a large university is a help in some areas. DH enjoyed the Tempe, AZ area as he fell in love with all the bicycle paths and how the motorists respect the cyclists. We visited Sante Fe, NM. I am interested in that area because of the large arts community. However, the state population is less than that of Atlanta. DH grew up in Atlanta and I lived there for two years. Even though I grew up in a small community, I like the larger city. Well, I like living close to the city but far enough out that I can have a real yard for DD and fruit trees and a vegetable garden. We've considered Ashville, NC and the triangle but asthma is bad in children there - one of the worst places in the US. So, we nixed NC. We have sort of talked about Austin - GREAT MUSIC! But, even though it is a liberal oasis in the state, it would be hard for me to live there. Something I must work on. I am having difficulty living here because I feel suffocated by the conservatives. I certainly don't want to move into the same situation. DH loves the desert and the mountains. I like flat land, green trees, tall grass and the heat. We have considered moving south. But, we don't speak the language and it is scary to move out of the country when you don't have money to back you. I have Raynaud's but have decided that moving to the cold is worth it for my daughter. So, the cost of living and DH's ability to find another job is the limiting factor. We can't go rural because of my disability - transportation needs to be easy. The schools need to be good but the homeschooling laws need to be favorable as well. (They are great here in FL) There's just so much to consider that it can be overwhelming. It's no big deal if you don't have a child to consider but we do. We need to start traveling again and see these places for ourselves. But DH's job won't give him the time off. I guess we will work it out eventually. I just worry about choosing an appropriate guardian and having a nice playgroup for her as she grows. Then again, I'm a mother - worrying is my job description Carrol
Guest guest
That is interesting how we view different situations like liberals and conservatives. I feel much more comfortable and safe in a conservative area. In areas where I go, that is liberal, I have found they are so in your face, force feeding their ideas, way of life and " liberal point of view " on everyone. I feel TV is like that on the network channels, so for that reason we rarely watch them. Satellite has many other good choices. I've been vegetarian my whole life and love being in a community of like minded folks. My church offers that for the most part. Judy . Guest guest
I haven't read my e-mail in almost 2 weeks so I had yo delete the over 1500 I had but I'd love to put in a vote for Long Island NY. I'm about 30 min utes out of NYC where you can find anything you want. I have a vegetarian restaurnt right around the corner. In fact, I make thier vegan chocolate cake ( as well as for thier 2 restaurants in NYC). People here are becoming much more veg friendly. We have a ealth food store evry where you look. We ave very lucky to live in a place where it is so easy. We do have the ocean very near by but we don't have really have much untouched space that you would have living further away from veg resources. And whoever does live in areas like that can order stuff on line. I can't order woods or mountains. Guest guest
This had been such an interesting thread. It is really wonderful the way we all love where we live. Some love being out in the country, maybe off grid. Others love being in a city and not needing a car. Some moved hundreds of miles to find their home and others moved around the corner. The diversity of the US is apparent even among veg-heads. Be well, Robin 3 rules to live by. What doesn't matter, Doesn't matter. (Who is going to remember the spilled milk 15 years from now?) Laugh every day, even if it is at yourself. (All accidents have a funny side, find them and embrace the moment with laughter.) Love like there is no tomorrow. (This one will get your right where it hurts most. Do you want your child's last memory of you to be one of yelling and anger.) Guest guest
Wow! That is exactly how I feel about the conservatives in my area! I dread answering my door or phone. I can't get out of my car at WalMart without fighting my way through pamphlets and loudspeakers. The city has passed a law allowing small billboards in residential yards, the majority of which state conservative views. The TV commercials for the local businesses advertise they give discounts to conservatives. My husband wants to quit his job because he is forced to listen to the conservative view against his will all day every day (he has complained and was told he had no case.) We have a friend who did quit his job. And, I have never had a liberal say anything to me without testing the water first. Not to start a thread and especially not any type of flaming, but isn't it funny how we feel the same way but about different groups I'm sure location has a lot to do with our experiences. But, I digress as this is certainly off thread. Carrol (BTW, don't you live just a few hours north of me? Isn't it funny there is that much difference in the activism in our communities.) , " wwjd " <jtwigg wrote: > > That is interesting how we view different situations like liberals and conservatives. Guest guest
Interesting. I have lived in the same general vacinity as you and NEVER had any of this happen. I've lived in the south all my life. Judy - rtillmansmail Thursday, August 10, 2006 7:33 PM Re: Best place to live Wow! That is exactly how I feel about the conservatives in my area!
