I've read several responses on this, but how is it done? I'd really appreciate

knowing that. Thanks!

stuff! Especially about the eczema treatment. My son and I have it and it's

driving me crazy. Plus this about making your own shampoo and laundry detergent.

That'd certainly be something to try. I have no idea what's in my shampoo, and

even some of the unscented, dye-free detergents irritate our skin. Please share!

too. over the past year we've actually

eradicated almost all of our personal use products. my son isn't really a

baby anymore so we don't use burt's bees stuff much anymore (plus, it's way

expensive, so i don't imagine we'll be using it when this baby comes). we

use organic hemp diapers with recycled covers and recycled fleece wipes with

vinegar/water and that's all we put on his butt! my husband has eczema and

we went through pretty much every product in the book before settling on an

internal regimen of evening primrose and flax oil and an external regimen of

palm oil and borage with the occasional homeopathic when he flares up. i

make my own soap and shampoo and to wash our clothes and diapers we use

vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. for deodorant we use the rock, i

don't shave anymore, and my husband grew out his beard (he does trim it

though). my one personal indulgence is the kiss my face patchouli lotion.

:) baby steps, ya know, but we're making as many personal changes as seem

feasible at the time, not just for the animals, but our own health. it's

amazing how having a child really makes you reevaluate what is essential and

how much harm and hypocrisy you will allow yourself to commit. :)

it's very simple. i recycled a bunch of cotton fleece from the thrift store

and cut them into wipe-sized shapes. then i have a little dish on the

changing table that i fill with one cup of water to one tablespoon of

vinegar. i dip the wipe in, wring it out, and wipe his butt. :) very

simple. if we're going out, i just wrap up some of the wipes in a diaper

and use water in the bathroom or whatever. since i've been doing this my

son has NEVER had a single little rash, and that's saying a lot because he

has incredibly sensitive skin and before i started doing this i was fighting

off some of the worst rashes...yeast, once time, but mostly just little

rashes that would explode into open wet sores (a lot of that was detergent

build-up -- we've fixed that problem too). it was really terrible how bad

his rashes would get and i was starting to think i was just screwing up the

cloth diapering thing irrevocably. but really, those throwaway wipes you

buy are stuffed with chemicals, all kinds of gross stuff, and i decided it

was pretty dumb for me to use cloth diapers with throwaway wipes anyway. i

saw someone at the farmer's market who was selling these really cute fleece

wipes that she'd made herself and she wanted me to pay $3 a piece! i

thought, i can do that! they don't look as nice but they work by golly and

it only cost me $3 to make 3 dozen of the things. highly recommended! it's

softer on the bum anyway.
