Mmm, Mmm Microalgae

Hi Alan,

I stated taking a microalgae supplement about a month ago. I think it's

helping to clear up a persistant dry skin patch on my hand. I'm taking

Deva Vegan Omega 3 DHA capsules (microalgae in a vegan capsule).

My kids however can't stand the taste of it (even in a smoothie)....and

I'm wondering if anyone has found this in a flavoured liquid or tablet

format that might be more palatable to them or has any suggestions on

this.

Your body does convert flax oil into DHA..but if you eat lots of high

Omega 6 oils (like peanut butter) then this reduces your bodies ability

to convert the omega three into the long chain DHA.

I read that it is recommended to get between 700-1500mg/week of DHA. Dr

Sears recommends 1500 mg http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T040900.asp

It was hard to start taking the capsules because they have a very fishy

aftertaste...however I'm getting used to it now...maybe my body is

adjusting to it...it seems to help if I take them with a smoothie or

something...I read that the fiber in ground flax seeds in your smoothie

might help to bind with oils to help reduce the aftertaste/fishy burps.

Melanie.

P.S. To get this from animal sources: you would need to eat about 5-10

Omega 3 rich eggs each week (The omega 3/DHA in these eggs come from

flax fed chickens..chickens also create DHA from eating insects and

other seeds & grasses..)

http://www.goldcirclefarms.com/products/o3_eggs.html

or two - four servings of Salmon or Tuna per week (the fish get their

DHA from algea) (See Dr. Sears above). Some studies have apparently

shown that premie babies supplemented with DHA from algea gain weight

faster than babies supplemented with fish oil...and that there may be

some disadvantages to giving infants fish oil supplements. (See:

Good info, Melanie.

My kids have a warm cup of soymilk, flavored with either strawberry or

chocolate syrup each night before bed. So, I've been mixing in the

liquid drops form of O-Mega-Zen3. The dose calls for 15 drops for

children, but I think the dose is too high and so I give them 10

drops. I started with 2 drops, then 3, then 4 ... until I worked up

to 10. I skip some nights. The kids haven't noticed. (Warning to

parents ... don't get the smelly liquid on your fingers!)

I get the liquid drops from Pangea: http://www.veganstore.com/index-

As for me, I've been taking a capsule about 2 or 3 days a week.
