Guest guest
Hi all, Does anyone have suggestions on how/where to advertise for/find vegetarian or veg-friendly nannies? We want to find someone who will get how we are raising our son or at least respect this enough to not eat meat around him. But equally importantly we want to find someone who isn't constantly drinking soda and eating junk food at the same time. Our nanny respects that we are raising our son this way but goes to the mall each day and gets her own lunch -- which is usually a chicken burrito or something like that from a fast food place and coke and chips. Would love thoughts from someone who has grappled with this. Is it unreasonable to hope for somoene who is vegetarian or at least will eat this way around our son and promote organic, healthy eating... Thanks! Meredith Want to start your own business? Guest guest
Do you have any vegetarian or vegan restaurants near your home? A Indian vegetarian restaurant that I have frequented has a message board in the back of the restaurant where people post that they are/are seeking nannies of Vegetarian/Hindi/Indian persuasions. You may try that. Renee Meredith Blake <meredithblake1 Tuesday, November 14, 2006 11:52:13 PM How to find a vegetarian/veg-friendly nanny? Guest guest
You absolutely have the right to request that your nanny not eat junk in front of your child. If you had a kosher home, you would certain expect your nanny to not eat bacon in front of your child. Why not offer to provide lunch food for your nanny? We always have burrito fixings in our refridgerator (refriend beans, tortillas, rice, cheese, salsa). You can work with her to determine what she will eat that will fit with your home. You might try using a service. I have no idea what the fees are, but there is the added advantage of getting a nanny who has had a thorough background check. Guest guest
Don't know if this is possible for you, but if there's a college or university nearby, you're likely to have better luck with a student. If you need full-time care, consider the spouse of a grad or post-grad student. By definition, they're usually more educated and less parochial in their views. Guest guest
Meredith, I didn't have a nanny issue, as we were able to arrange our schedules to be with my son before he was school age. I do have some suggestions for you. If you have a health food store or food coop in your area, I would post a notice on the bulletin board. When I go to the coops and HFS in our area, there are always lots of notices looking for nannies or nannies looking for work. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Oh yes, what I'd give to have a college nearby!! We used to have a girl babysit who was 13 at the time, always did a good job, then the last time she babysat right before we moved away she called her mother and threatened her! I would just die to have a college nearby where I could find even a once a week babysitter even... we don't get out much around here. Guest guest
My wife and I home-school and have arranged our schedules so that she works on my days off and vice versa, but I'd suggest if there is a Hare Krishna or Buddhist temple or something similar in the area you might find someone more compatible. , VAP79 wrote: Meredith, > I didn't have a nanny issue, as we were able to arrange our schedules to be > with my son before he was school age. > I do have some suggestions for you. > If you have a health food store or food coop in your area, I would post a > notice on the bulletin board. Guest guest
Maybe try local Red Cross or Saint John Ambulance and ask about students who have passed their babysitting course? Don't know if they eat better but likely safer. ~P > Would love thoughts from someone who has grappled with this. Guest guest
We have find 2 fantastic, veg-friendly nannies. One we foundon craigslist, where our post said something like " We are a veg-friendly family; you need not be veg, but you must be comfortable with our choices. " The other one we found through an agency; we simply asked her if she was comfortable with working in a veg household and only feeding our child veg foods.
