Guest guest
Tracy, I consulted my associate who is a naturpath and has been to Africa. She advises to not get the malaria vaccine. It's an antibiotic and makes you extremely sun sensitive, plus a bunch of other nasty things. She took Neem - from the health food store, in a liquid form. Follow label directions. A good B complex, and take PABA if you are sun sensitive. Also, start to take acidolphilus now to put extra good bacteria into your body. Hope this helps. Peace, Laura in MD tracychilds writes: Also, does anyone know of anything we can take internally to keep the little buggers (mosquitoes) from biting? I'm planning to bring b- vites and garlic pills. Anything else? They don't seem to bite me or my 16 yo son much but they love my 11 yo daughter and my husband. We've discussed repellants here before. From what I understand DEET is nasty but works the best. Citronella works but not for as long. We hardly ever have to use the stuff here in So Cal! Any advice? Guest guest
Hi Everybody, We are going to Panama for the holidays. We will be visiting some remote locations. I'm wondering about having the family take malaria preventative medicine. Do any of you out there have experience with this? What would you do in this situation? I've researched it and it looks like it could be a concern. One place we are visiting, San Blas Islands, make you ineligible to give blood for one year (I just gave blood and they looked it up). My problem is that we hardly ever go to Drs. (too healthy - ha!) and so I don't know if I'll be able to get in to see anybody beforehand. I also don't want to take nasty stuff (or my family) if we don't have to! Also, does anyone know of anything we can take internally to keep the little buggers (mosquitoes) from biting? Guest guest
Tracy, Check with the teaching/university hospitals in your area. There should be at least one travellers clinic near where you are. They specifically deal with travelling issues: you can call them to ask questions, and getting an appointment to come in for vaccinations or medications to bring with is usually very quick & easy. Here, for example, is the Healthy Traveler clinic in Pasadena, which I found in about 3 seconds by googling the words " travel clinic vaccination " . Have fun! Guest guest
Thanks for doing that Laura! I really appreciate it. Did she say that she took Neem to help her immune system or to repell the mosquitos or both? I just did some internet searching and it looks like there are products out there for external application. I'll ask at the HFS today. And Liz, thanks for the website. I checked it out. I don't live near there, but it has some good info. Tomorrow we are going to consult w/ Dr. specializing in travel. We can decide what to take from there. I will get us all on acidolphilus. I've been taking it regularly but not the rest of the family! It would be great to find something to eat/take to make the mosquitoes just stay away!
