Hi,

Someone has mentioned the subject of HypnoBirthing, while I was doing a

different project for VRG(vrg.org) and I was wondering about

researching into this.

I'm looking for people who have gone through this, what was your

experience like and to also create a list of classes and teachers.

Thank you:)

I did this with my husband when I had our son. We're just outside of

Chicago, but the classes we went to were also held in the city proper. Our

instructor was Tanya McHale (her website is http://www.tanyamchale.com/).

She was the nurse at my midwife's office, but I don't know if she's still

there or not.

She was just amazing.

It does take a lot of practice, besides the class time. I loved it, it

really helped me manage the contractions (we also did a water labor, I did

end up with a c-section in the end as I wasn't progressing after about

12-14hrs, and my son was 9 days overdue and we when my water broke, he had

already passed meconium so we were limited in how much longer they'd let me

labor in the tub). It really was a tremendous help, as was the water.

I'm not sure what all you want to know, but I highly recommend it, and our

instructor. The experience was amazing, the relaxation techniques helped so

much (she gave us different things to try in class, and we could pick

whatever and alter them as we liked to our own liking/etc - even the music I

picked, I still listen to because it was something I really liked to help me

drift into 'the state'). I did lose track of time, and I was able to deal

with my labor in such a way, my attending midwife on call when I went into

labor didn't think I was in active labor when I talked to her (she was the

only one in the practice who had not had experience with hypnobirthing).

When we went to the hospital, they didn't think I was as far along as I was

(I was dilated 7cm when we went in, which was only about 2hrs after I went

into labor at 1am). My husband and I were cracking jokes, and I was climbing

on the birthing bed, and on the birthing ball and laughing they were amazed

at how together I was.

Of course, because there were only 2 water birthing rooms, they do have a

time limit if you are not progressing as we did, but after the 12hrs or so

of being in there they did move me. With that move, I was not able to get

back into the state, and things went wacky after that, but it was only a few

hours after that that our son was born. I would not have changed my

experience with the hypnosis (well, up to the changing of the rooms, but my

son was born healthy and perfect, and I couldn't wish for anything better

than that!). My case at the end was particularly rare, but up until the last

couple of hours, I had no medication, and was able to deal with my labor and

everything. I would totally suggest hiring your hypnosis leader if they are

available, as we were too tired, and I could have really used the extra

support and advocacy she would have provided when we were nearing the end (I

don't think we even thought about some of the other visualizations we could

have tried, nor did we have them, as we forgot about my suitcase and the

scripts and everything in our car - they valet parked it when we were

admitted, and my husband thought he'd have time to run out and get it. LOL.)

It was wonderful.

If there is anything particular about it that you want to know, I will

answer any questions. I'm just not sure what exactly you are looking for. :)

Hope this helps.

Missie

Hi, Missie,

I was going to respond to this today, so it was funny to check my email this

morning and see that someone responding had gone to the same HypnoBirthing

class and midwife service as I did. [As a side note, I had a similar labor

to you, Missie: a long, natural labor that wasn't progressing and ended up

in a c-section (mine was 52 hours, though).]

My experience with the HypnoBirthing class was that I enjoyed it but I don't

think that I'm particularly hypnotizable (is that a word?). We did the

practicing at home and really wanted it to work for me, but it really didn't

take. It did, however, help to relax me a lot and for that reason alone was

totally worth it. I do think that a certain segment of the population is not

very easily hypnotized, though, so if that's what you're looking for, you

may want to find out first if you are one of them.

Also, Missie, I don't know if your family is vegan or not, but if so we do

have a great social group here called the Chicago Vegan Family Network. We

have fabulous potlucks once a month and a camping trip in the summer. If

you're interested in being a part of it, just email me. Not everyone in the

group is vegan, but almost all who aren't are leaning that way and respect

the vegan lifestyle. We are supportive of all.

Happy New Year, everyone!
