He not only didn't have to get the tubes (I dont think I would have anyway), but his ear infections ended!! He had had many ear infections starting at 7 days old even - though he was completely breastfed. There is no need for your daughter to drink any type of milk. Maybe she'd prefer to have her cereal dry. Much easier to carry around Or maybe she'd like something else for breakfast. If you really want a milk substitute there are many kinds. My kids preferred Rice Dream when they were younger. Now they like any kind of substitute. There's almond milk which I think is great and for a splurge, chocolate Rice Dream warmed up is really good. Good luck. Remember we are the only species that drinks another species milk! Best wishes, Pam (who hasn't had a moment for an intro yet...) Guest guest
I need help. I have recently started eating a vegetarian diet and have taken my 2 youngest off of dairy because of allergies. What is the best substitute for dairy. I have tries Silk in vanilla but my 6 year old is saying that she doesn't like the taste. She is real fussy about most things she eats. She hasn't been eating meat for some time because she can't stand the texture or taste. But just recently we have been in and out of the doctor because of ear infections. Guest guest
Dairy isn't a natural part of the human diet, so you don't have to replace it with anything. But for your situation, if your daughter is used to drinking milk that will be tough. My daughter loves Rice Dream rice milk. So does my son. For my daughter I put in a little of the flavoring stuff. She won't drink it plain. Right now we have these banana and orange milk flavoring things. My mom got her those for Christmas so I don't know where they came from. Even strawberry milk would probably be good. But if it comes down to your daughter drinking water instead, don't worry that she's missing out on anything. We humans (and other animals) weren't designed to drink milk after weaning. imblsdby3 <imblsdby3 wrote: I need help. Another brand is Continent 8, it is suppose to be a smoother flavor. Hope this helps. Guest guest
are you saying that you want to get her back on dairy? i'm sorry, i was confused by that... there are lots of other milk substitutes if you feel she needs one. you can try almond, oat, and rice. nut milks appeal to many children. you can even make your own " milks " at home. i always found rice to be most like skim milk, back when it was important to me that it taste like milk, LOL. almond is quite sweet and i think it's really good on cereal. i have never been partial to soymilk so i only use it for cooking mainly, and occasionally on cereal. you can try different brands of soymilk also; IME they all taste different. a lot of people seem to like 8th continent. and try different kinds within one brand too. you mentioned that you'd tried vanilla. i think a lot of parents try that because they think their kids will like the sweetness, but i find the sweetness cloying. also if you're hoping it will taste like milk to your daughter, flavored is not the way to go. we just use the unflavored stuff for our son and he loves it, hates the flavored stuff. i can understand why you'd want something for her to put on her cereal, but other than that, it might be helpful for you to get away from the idea that your daughter MUST have milk or something like it. it's just propaganda from dairy companies. if she is eating a varied diet, she's getting plenty of protein and calcium in her other foods, and there's no reason why she can't just drink good ol' water, or maybe some very diluted pure fruit juice. chandelle' On 1/10/07, imblsdby3 <imblsdby3 wrote: > > I need help. Guest guest
Have you tried the Silk Enhanced Soy Milk? It's a plain version of Silk, in a blue refrigerated container, and I (and my son) find that it tastes nice and creamy, with no off " beany " taste of most soy milks. I don't like the Vanilla or other flavored versions of soy milks. Maybe you'd like that one better? And, if your child is scared of the sight once you take out the soy milk container, perhaps you could pour some into a (cleaned) cow milk jug? Maybe the child wouldn't know the difference then... Guest guest
and we certainly weren't designed to drink milk from another species! if you want a flavored milk minus the colorings, chemicals, and added sugar, there's a very simple way to do it. just throw the milk, whether it's soy, rice, or whatever, into a blender with some fresh or frozen fruit. you can also throw in a banana, but that will make it more smoothie-like. i did this during my pregnancy because i couldn't convince myself to eat anything and i knew i could get a lot of my nutrients from silk enhanced - but i hate the taste. so i'd flavor it with peaches, blueberries, strawberries, or whatever i had on hand. it's very yummy and great for kids because it's easy to involve them and they're more inclined to eat/drink something if they were involved in making it. my son loves to toss the fruit in and push th buttons on the blender. you can also mak a great, fast breakfast this way by mixing it with some next-day brown rice! Guest guest
Try Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla. If her cereal has some sweetness to it (most do) then it will sweeten the milk. It also doesn't have as much of an aftertaste to get used to like soy and rice milk have. I've found that all milk subs taste good in smoothies. Guest guest
Try a variety of different soy milks to see which one tastes best to your daughter. We tried quite a few and now we use So Nice Organic fortified soy milk. (Available in Canada...not sure about the US). I find it difficult to get my kids to eat enough of the calcium rich foods that they need so I like the reassurance that they are getting their calcium and B12 in drink form. Also, if you are relying on the milk to replace cows milk, you might also want to compare the amount of protein in the milks you buy. Soy milk is quite high in protein compared with rice milk or even the Almond Breeze (which was surprising to me)... So if you're using these you might want to make sure you're getting diverse sources of protein in other ways like using lots of lentils, beans, tofu, quinoa, cabbage, nuts etc. There are also some mixed rice/soy milks to try too. But again, we don't need cows milk...I guess we're just culturally used to getting alot of our protein, calcium, Vit D & B12 from it...just make sure you & your kids are getting these in other ways. All the best, Melanie. imblsdby3 wrote: > > I need help. I have recently started eating a vegetarian diet and have > taken my 2 youngest off of dairy because of allergies. Guest guest
Sorry, I'm not joking. When you don't purchase organic, there is an excellent chance that you are purchasing genetically modified produce; you are also enlarging your environmental footprint. Guest guest
Oh yea, organic apples are the only way to go! The others are so coated and shiny, blech! I missed the farmers market this weekend but picked up some organic Pink Lady and Ambrosia apples at my grocery store. Cindi Kadee M <abbey_road3012 wrote: Yum, jellyfish. (ack!) Guest guest
I don't know about jellyfish genes in tomatoes in particular but I do know genetically modified foods (like fruits and vegetables) can contain genes from various animals. Guest guest
Thank everyone so much for all the suggestions. I think that I will try putting the soy milk in a regular milk container. I know she always comments about the carton. Again thanks it was so useful. Also the information about the apples was great.

Guest guest
We found the Silk soymilk to be on the sweet side. We always get plain varieties, since it seems the others have too much sugar in them for our liking (any brand). The enhanced in the blue box is good, rich and creamy like somone else said. more like cow milk from what I recall. We also like the 365 brand (the whole foods store brand) 8th continent is also good. Surprisingly, at Aldi they have organic soymilk in plain, vanilla and chocolate for pretty cheap, too (they have some organic stuff that is kind of surprising to see there). We haven't had dairy in a long time, as we also have a milk allergy with our son, he got whelts on his legs/diaper area, even his behaviour/moods changed drastically and almost immediately, on top of his tummy having problems. You have to also check other stuff you eat, as a dairy allergy is pretty tricky since they shove milk into all kinds of things - crackers, peanutbutter crackers, bread, lots of frozen foods and premade foods in general. Also - dairy free cheese (you really have to read on those since they stick casien in many of them) and all kinds of general vegetarian foods (Morningstar farms hot dogs, chick patties and their breakfast stuff - many of them have milk. Because of all this, we actually found going vegan was much much easier to keep out hidden dairy.Eggs were easy for me, because I never ever liked them, and we transitioned slowly for my husband and my son. Of course, your milage may vary. If you just want to be sure she gets enough calcium, garbanzos are a good source. We mash them and add to oatmeal - gives it a nice nutty flavor, and they are hardly noticable. Good luck, dairy allergies are terrible things. I can sympathize with you on that (though our son hardly ever had any ear infections. There is a helpful list of all the different names for milk and milk derivatives to avoid at http://www.foodallergy.org/allergens/milk.html I have a printable list I found here that we gave to the inlaws here: http://www.users.qwest.net/~fsdebra1/refluxdairy.html Hope that helps!
