I just read that the main ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil. I didn't know that

before. :(

Almost all lubricants in your car are made from animal by-products.

They put something in everything, don't they? At least the WD-40 I can

consciously not buy.

That is an urban myth. According to Wikipedia " There is a popular

urban legend that the main ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil. Although

it is unknown whether the formula contains fish oil, material safety

data sheets for the product show that the main ingredient is Stoddard

solvent, not fish oil.[4] WD-40, is however used by some sea fishermen

as an added scent when fishing with bait. "

Moreover, the main ingredients, from the material safety sheet, are:

* 50% Stoddard solvent (mineral spirits, also commonly known as

dry cleaning solvent),

* 25% Liquified petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant, carbon

dioxide is used now to reduce considerable flammability),

* 15+% Mineral oil (light lubricating oil), and

* 10-% Inert ingredients

Petroleum isn't much more palatable. But, I remember hearing awhile back

of a more benign alternative. Can't remember now what it was but if I

run across it I will share it with the list.

That's better... why would they say it's made from fish oil?

As an alternative to petroleum, you may wish to check

out Amsoil synthetic lubricants for your car (see

http://www.amsoil.com). The owner is a member of Co-op

America and frequently posts on the Green Business

email loop I'm in. I'm not exactly sure what's in his

products, but I get the impression they are NOT

petroleum based.

As for the WD-40 alternative, check out Biokleen's Soy

Blends Soy Lube (see

http://www.bi-o-kleen.com/soyblends.htm).

Hope that helps!
