How do people feel about using microwave ovens?

I remember when they were the environmentally responsible thing to do.

Then, I began hearing health concerns.

Do you use one? If not, why not?

Thanks in advance for your answers -- this list is always a wealth of

The Center For Science in the Public Interest did a good article about

this last year.

What it comes down to is that the scary info floating around is based

entirely on rumours and that microwaves are safe. They do give some

safetly tipes though (i.e. don't cook things in plastic bags (they can

melt) orbrown paper bags or newspapers (they can contain bits of metal

and the glue in the seams can melt) and don't reuse disposable

containers (i.e. margarine tubs).

I use mine strictly for reheating. The rule of thumb is proteins break down at

around four minutes.

We don't use one for the reason being that they zap the nutritrients from your

food. I read some information on it a long time ago but don't remember the

resources. I remember enough to know not to use one.

Heh, I was about to post something similar, but didn't have my links handy

(my computer is in the 'shop' and needed a new HD sigh). :)

We have a small one, and I don't often use it, but it is nice for reheating

and defrosting frozen bagles/soft pretzles (if you don't want them toasted).

I've used it more around holidays for heating up pre-cooked stuff for

holiday dinners though. I wasn't going to replace our oven and stove use

with it, so we didn't need the microwave/convection oven thing. Found the

smallest plain vanilla one to be perfectly suited for what we need. Oh, I

also haven't had one for almost 10 years, but I'm glad we have this one now

that we have it. They can be handy if you are in a hurry.

If I'm in a hurry I'll use it, but if I have the time I'll just cook whatever I

want on the stove or in the oven. I don't think a microwave is going to kill any

of us, but probably stove/oven cooked food is better for us.

FWIW, we don't use them. Every other use of

microwaves requires one of those beware:radiation

signs....why in the world take the chance, you know?

I'm convinced that 50 years from now, scientists are

going to say: " what were we thinking? " . And yet, I

know that restaurants use them all the time, as do

many of my friends, so it's not like we've never eaten

anything microwaved. They say that the ovens are

better sealed now, so maybe they're safe. But, I

figure everyone is allowed to be a Luddite in some

area of life!

Don't use it except to reheat some things. Hubby swears he can taste

the difference. So even leftovers usually get reheated in the oven.
