Guest guest
Has anyone had experience with skin on corner of fingers and toes cracking and back of hands bleeding because of extreme dryness? I do wash my hands a lot, but even with moisturizing them, I still have this problem. Sometimes I can't use my hands to do certain things because I can cause the backs of the hands to bleed spontaneously or my finger tips hurt because of the cracking. I take flax seed oil daily, but was wondering if these are symptoms of some deficiency in my vegan diet.
Guest guest
i don't know about a deficiency. it sounds like somewhat extreme winter dryness to me. i experienced that often as a SAD kid, even living in AZ. try an internal regimen of flax and evening primrose and a topical application of hemp oil. don't wash your hands with soap unless you absolutely have to and rub oil in right away afterward. if you are concerned about your diet, do a food chart for a week, add up your nutrients, and see if you are missing anything. chandelle' On 2/9/07, admartin5 <admartin5 wrote: > > Has anyone had experience with skin on corner of fingers and toes cracking > and back of hands bleeding because of extreme dryness? Guest guest
My hands are like that too. I have no idea how to fix it though. I blame it on years of swim team and chlorine drying out my skin. Renee " admartin5 " <admartin5 Friday, February 9, 2007 11:21:42 AM Symptom of Deficiency? Guest guest
I found the BEST moisturizer, and of all things you can get it at Wal-Mart. I'm sure other places have it too. It's Tree Hut brand, and they have coconut lime, brazilian nut (smells like coffee), and plain shea butter. They all worked wonders for my eczema. admartin5 wrote: Has anyone had experience with skin on corner of fingers and toes cracking and back of hands bleeding because of extreme dryness? Guest guest
Consume a large amount of water daily (like 50-80 oz minimum depending on your size) and take evening primrose oil capsules. That should help. Renee Carroll <renecarol25 wrote: My hands are like that too. I have no idea how to fix it though. I blame it on years of swim team and chlorine drying out my skin. Guest guest
My daughter used to have this occasionally and I would have her wet her hands and then rub in some A & D ointmenrt with the zinc Oxide(that is very healing to the skin) in it. It worked great!!!! Also you could put some Vitamin D Oil on it too, but the above works like magic. I also had her increase her water intake. Most dry skin is really helped by drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day and more if you are overweight. Judy - Renee Carroll Friday, February 09, 2007 12:01 PM Re: Symptom of Deficiency? Guest guest
I'm pretty sure that A & D is petroleum based... wwjd <jtwigg wrote: My daughter used to have this occasionally and I would have her wet her hands and then rub in some A & D ointmenrt with the zinc Oxide(that is very healing to the skin) in it. Guest guest
Before blaming your diet for the chapped skin, have you thought about the usual non-dietary culprits? Do you use humidifiers? Are you washing your skin too often with too-hot water and too-harsh of a soap? Are you drinking lots of water every day? Also, apparently there's an athlete's foot variation that causes cracks in the skin in the feet, and it responds to the same or similar medication as the more common athelete's foot. From a dietary perspective, perhaps you're not consuming enough fat. Or, you might be sensitive to a food product. I know that if I don't carefully cleanse my hands after cutting onions or garlic, I will develop what appears to be a chemical burn on my fingers. It sounds really painful. I hope you find a solution soon! Liz
Guest guest
I have no problem with using a petroleum ointment product. It has nothing to do with a vegetarian diet. A & D with zinc oxide is a great product! - robin koloms Friday, February 09, 2007 1:38 PM Re: Symptom of Deficiency? Guest guest
no, I know several people that this happens to, none of them vegan. Last year it was really bad for me, but this year has been better. Can you sleep in those cosmetic gloves, after applying a really good moisturizer? That helped me some. Also humidifying my bedroom helped. _____ On Behalf Of admartin5 Friday, February 09, 2007 11:22 AM Symptom of Deficiency? Guest guest
Thanks to all for your replies. They were encouraging in the sense that it sounds like my problem is not diet-related! - leena Saturday, February 10, 2007 1:36 PM RE: Symptom of Deficiency? no, I know several people that this happens to, none of them vegan. Guest guest
I have had an aweful time with this also. Using rubber gloves when I'm doing the dishes has helped a lot. This is the first year I've done it consistently, and it makes a big difference. Plus moisturizing when I remember. Although I'm still washing my hands so often they are dry at the tips. My sister had a neutrogena hand cream in a small tube that worked pretty well (not sure if it's vegan). They are still dry, probably b/c I don't drink as much water, and the hand washing. But the bleeding has stopped. Which is very good. There was also a cream I used a few nights before I went to bed from Burt's - a natural cream for dry hands. A tiny little tube for about $5, but it lasted for a couple months using once or twice a week before bed. Hopefully I remember the olive oil treatments others recommended before crashing into bed. admartin5 wrote: Has anyone had experience with skin on corner of fingers and toes cracking and back of hands bleeding because of extreme dryness? Guest guest
oh yes - I agree with janeen - I religiously use the rubber kitchen gloves on my right hand at least (the more affected hand) and I suspect that has helped a lot too. I still have to wash my hands frequently because of diaper changes and other assorted small children issues (we have 2 still in diapers and still messy eaters) but I think the gloves at dishwashing time have helped. Guest guest
Be sure to wear gloves outside, too. I drink water like a camel, eat loads of hemp oil ... and still get this. But oddly only on my RIGHT hand this year. But, I live in a very cold climate and I have a bad habit of reaching into my pocket at twenty or thirty or forty below to grab keys ... or otherwise touching cold metal. So, I have literally been burning myself. So, if it is cold where you live ... do what I did and grab some thin gloves to wear as a liner inside your warmer mitts. ~P 62N admartin5 wrote: > > > Has anyone had experience with skin on corner of fingers and toes
Guest guest
Well I do have that problem as well, not on my feet but really badly on my hands. I too take flaxseed oil and GLA from...(yuiks, cant remember what it is called, not borago but.....?) it havent helped much. But a friend of my who is a nutritionist said it could be a vitamine D deficiency. So now im going to try to take extra D. Vitamine B´s has also a lot to do with the health of the skin, so it is important to make sure to get enough. So keep grain and nuts in water over night, it will help to manke sure of maximum absorbtion of vitamines and minerals. It might not has to do with the fact that we are vegans, but I do belive it has everything to do with lack of absorbtion or a poor diet. I know the cause of my problem is beacuse of colitis I had a few years ago. It has done that I have a lack of absorbtion of nutriens, even thoug I live extreamly healty. So im working on healing up my gut :-) Kristine , <admartin5 wrote: > > Thanks to all for your replies.
