Guest guest
Spiders are indeed very neat, we used to have this humongous black and yellow one in the back yard at my parents' house. She had an enormous web, like one from a photo. It was perfect. She laid eggs and had babies, which was cool. Spiders were fine and dandy till the Jumping Spider Incident. It was in our apartment that we lived in two houses ago. I was sitting on the couch with my daughter and we were reading a book when I felt something on my arm. It was one of those fuzzy black jumping spiders. AAAHHH!! I hurled Leah (as gently as possible) to the other side of the couch and ran trembling to the door to put him outside. But by the time I got there he was gone. He'd jumped off, and I didn't know where he was. Those suckers will bite, so I took Leah and locked her in her room so the spider couldn't get her. I found him on the arm of the couch and I told him VERY POLITELY to please stay there while I went to the kitchen. I got a cup and a paper towel and as I reached over to put the cup on him, he jumped onto my arm, and then onto my FACE. The blinds were open and the maintenance guy Eddie apparently saw me in there jumping and freaking out. Probably heard me screaming too. Well anyway, in the end I caught that awful spider and took him outside just as Eddie the maintenance guy was coming up the stairs to see what in the heck was going on. I showed him the spider and he kind of snickered at me. So now spiders go outside because their sense of humor is not agreeable to me. I'm glad to have another rat person around, I think a lot of the time people think I'm crazy the way I talk about my rats like they're people or dogs... but you understand this madness! The six foster rats we have right now are going to their forever home on Saturday... :*( I will miss them, but I'm happy they found a good home. I leave them, they are quite welcome in my house, unless I see them run across the floor, and then I am duty bound to catch them and relocate them outside..currently though, I have to say I have a rather beautiful spider in the kitchen. she is long and black, with beautiful long sinuous black legs..I actually play with her by touching the outside of her funnel like web, and she'll feel whatever it is I use to touch it with the ends of her legs. she no longer darts out to see what's happening - I think she's gotten used to me doing this. I just enjoy seeing her, because she really is a pretty thing so efficient and utterly wonderful are spiders and I'm totally getting off topic here, but I wanted to just reply to your post here anyway hope no one minds take care! Guest guest
Hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but I'm another rat lady. We got our 2 boys from a friend, we got to watch them grow up, and took care of them in the weaning phase with their 2 brothers while my friend was on vacation. We fell in love with them, and they are just the sweetest gigantic boys. I had a mouse when I was in high school - basically my friend and I rescued them because some jerks brought 4 of them to our prom, let them go inside and she and I ran around trying to catch them. We only found 2 of them, and I feel so bad for the other 2 we didn't find. That was so very looong ago it seems. LOL. But he was loved, too. We now have our ratties and some fish (just got a nice 20gallon tank for free from a friend of a friend who just wanted to get rid of the tank -it had been empty for some time) and 3 cats (they don't seem interested at all in the rats, it was more fascinating for them to watch them when they were little, but as they got bigger, the novelty wore off). Guest guest
Kadee, that is a " garden spider " that you are describing. We had them where I lived growing up. I haven't seen one in years. Their webs are really interesting. Guest guest
Oh how good! See, vegetarians are the coolest because we have open minds!! I get soooo very upset when people act disgusted at the rats. Really, anybody who's ever met a nice rat couldn't possibly dislike them!! I think I've been a good influence on my neighbor Trish. She saw some rats at Petco for " adoption " and she snatched them up because they were in such bad conditions, and she kept the girls while I kept the boys. She loved them! She doesn't want any as pets but she now has a soft spot for them where there was not before. And in other awesome, awesome news about my being a good influence, Trish is also beginning to cut out a LOT of meat from her diet!! She's eaten meat once in the past week, I think. She asked why I decided to become a vegetarian and I told her in all the detail she'd tolerate (which was a lot!), and I think it really made an impact. So wahoo!! :) Missie Ward <mszzzi wrote: Hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but I'm another rat lady. Guest guest
Neato. That really was a neat spider. Beautiful web. And she lived outside, which is excellent.
