Would hemp oil work? I'm not sure... that's what we use anyway. :)

Apparently, the only way to encapsulate the oil is

with gelatin tabs, because both kosher (fish) gelatin

and veggie gelatin are dissolved by the oil, even when

in gelatin. The sales person said they're as

Now why this means they don't just carry the oil in

the refrigerated section, I can't figure out.

Has anyone found a source for this?

Also, someone (maybe on this list?) pointed out that

there are lots of people in the world living in

land-locked locales. From an evolutionary POV, there

has to be some non-oceanic way to get long chain omega

3s in our system. Anyone have any further info on

that?

Is this what you are looking for?

http://veganstore.com/vitamins-and-supplements/deva-vegan-omega_dash_3-dha/Page_\

I have tried taking this before (only while pregnant

because I feel my body is fine with ground flax seeds,

flax seed oil, walnuts, and hemp seeds/oil at other

times. I just don't like to risk it while pregnant.

Anyway, I could not stomach these...way too fishy

tasting! I can swallow almost any pill, but not

these. I was so glad that this pregnancy I have Silk

soymilk enriched with DHA (from algae).

We have a product that we just got from our naturopath called " Neurogen DHA "

which is a vegan algae capsule. It is a powdered Algae oil concentrate in a

vegetable capsule which doesn't even need to be refrigerated. It is made by

Genestra Brands, but I couldn't find it on their website. Try a naturopath, I

guess. And I have also heard good things about Joel Fuhrman's DHA Purity.

I have no further information about non-oceanic sources, apart from the usual

flax, hemp and walnuts which give us the ALA, some of which is converted into

DHA by the body.

Cheers,

Mark

Liz,

I get algae-derived long-chain DHA from a couple of places. For the kids, I use

Dr.

Fuhrman's DHA purity (liquid drops) available here:

http://drfuhrman.com/shop/supplements.aspx

For myself, I take Omega Zen3 algae-derived DHA in vegan capsule form available

from

various online retailers. Just do a Google search for the brand name. I have

never seen it

in a health food store, though. However, I have recently seen a new Udo's oil

in the HFS

that has a blend of oils, including algae-derived DHA. I didn't look at it

closely enough to

have anything to say as to the other oils included.

As far as land-locked peoples, here is the scoop:

Humans can convert short-chain omega-3s to long-chain, but everyone's efficiency

at

doing this is different depending upon sex, genetics, dietary and other factors.

So if you

only take in the short chain omega 3s (walnuts, flax, hemp) you can do one of

the

following:

Eat a diet for optimal conversion efficiency and assume you are converting

sufficient

amounts.

Get a fatty acid panel blood test done to assure you are converting optimal

amounts.

Take a long-chain supplement in addition to dietary short-chain sources to cover

all your

bases.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Linda....that's perfect! Expensive,

especially since it's not as easy to return as it

would be to a store (if I can't get the kids to

swallow them either!), but definitely what I meant.

Wonder why they've got no problem putting them in

vegan capsules?

Liz,

I just wanted you to know that that product is carried at Ethical Planet in

Evanston (I think!) and the creator of it lives in Wilmette. Small world!
