Guest guest
hi! i'm a 27 year old mom, living in ontario, canada. i have a 2.5 year old son, and i'm going to be having child number 2 any day now. we are vegetarian (except for my husband, but he only seldomly eats meat) - my son does not eat dairy, but eats eggs sometimes. i eat eggs sometimes, and dairy occasionally -- why does cheese have to be so good?? ideally, i would be eating a raw vegan diet, but i have a lot of food sensitivities, and i'm pregnant, so i do what i can. i was just wondering if there were any other moms with young kids living around me. it'd be nice to get to know a few more veggie/alternative minded moms! i live in keswick, which is just north of newmarket (north of toronto). liz
Guest guest
I'm in South-western Ontario, in Kitchener-Waterloo, which is about an hour West of Toronto. So, based on the scale of this group, that's pretty near! I have three boys, 5, 3 and 11 months. We're vegan since last summer. I'm 31 and I've been veg for 16 years, my husband for 10. I thought I could never give up cheese but it was surprisingly easy! A couple of great vegan cookbooks and you'll be on your way. Feel free to e-mail me off-list if you'd like. Guest guest
Hi, I live in Toronto and have two boys ages almost 4 and almost 2! Like Heather said, relatively speaking, it's pretty close. The boys and I are vegetarian but my DH is, unfortunately, a very committed omnivore. He will eat what I cook but won't necessary like it. Feel free to contact me offline if you wish. Guest guest
Hi Heather! Nice to meet you. Thanks for replying. My husband has a few friends in Kitchener-Waterloo, but unfortunately we don't get over there very often. That's great you're all vegan. I was vegan for many years, but have just been going back and forth a bit lately, with eggs and cheese, especially since I found out I have food sensitivities to ALL grains, plus lots of other vegan foods too. Guest guest
Hi Heather and Liz! This was enough for me to de-lurk. My husband and our twin boys (5 1/2 years old) and I spend summers in Sudbury! Well ok, not really close at all... (north and then west, about 4 hours) Please don't run me off the list, I'm not vegan but I joined this list to try to find out how to feed my kids now that we read Charlotte's Web... they have now been fairly consistently vegetarian ever since January or February. Not being vegetarian myself, I don't have a good idea how to provide them with a balanced diet. For several years I dated a vegetarian, and he was Italian and an excellent cook so I was effectively a vegetarian most of the time. So I'm not totally ignorant on vegetarian diets, but what do you do with vegetarian kids who don't eat their veggies??? :-P On May 2, 2007, at 8:43 PM, onederaliceoneder wrote: > Hi Heather! Guest guest
Food sensitivities do make things more difficult. My 3-year-old has a peanut allergy so there are all kinds of otherwise great vegan products that are off-limits to us because they " may contain traces " , including a lot of the better cereals, all nut butters (except peanut-free soy nut butter) and anything from bakeries (there are no peanut-free bakeries around here). My sister and my BIL, who has Celiac, recently decided to go vegetarian. I posted just a few days ago looking for gluten-free meat analogs and had a few great responses. They're also enjoying the cookbook Vegan Planet, it has a couple hundred recipes in it for meals that just happen to not contain gluten or are easily modified. I don't know any other vegan families around here, people mostly think we're a little (?) odd and they avoid talking about it with us. :-) Heather onederaliceoneder wrote: > > Hi Heather! Guest guest
Pick up a copy of Raising Vegetarian Children by Joanne Stepaniak and Vesanto Melina. It has lots of info in it for parents in your situation, and talks about diet as well as the family harmony aspect of it. The book is about two-thirds parenting and nutrition info, one-third recipes. Do you have room to grow some veggies yourselves, even in pots? That might get them interested, if they choose some and grow them. Hiding veggies is a great short-term solution but longer-term it would be nice to somehow rouse some interest so they eat them by choice! Maybe visiting farmer's markets in summer and letting them choose some things -- find some new recipes with some different ways to prepare things. I got the cookbook Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen for Christmas and it has lots of simple recipes for different things to do with veggies, many of which involve baking them with breadcrumbs, olive oil, salt and pepper with very yummy results! I can't wait for homegrown tomatoes this year, because of that cookbook I'm going to fill half my garden with different types of tomatoes!
