Guest guest
Hi Everyone. I am new to the group and joined for support. I am 4th generation lifelong vegetarian bringing up 3 children vegetarian. My husband is not vegetarian, but eats vegetarian at home (of course!) and generally tells people he's vegetarian because it's simpler. I have decided to try going Vegan. As a child, my mum went through phases of being vegan and although I missed cheese, it wasn't too big a deal. I now want to try it for myself and was hoping for support from this group - hope that's ok! p.s I presume you all picked up on the news yesterday about Mars confectionary no longer being vegetarian. Thanks Claire

Guest guest
They have started putting in rennet (made from the lining of calves stomachs) this covers (amongst others) galaxy, twix, snickers, mars. Any chocolate with a Best Before date of October will still be ok - only started adding rennet on 1st May. Follow this link to the Vegetarian Society website which will give you more information, from there you can also contact Masterfoods (Mars company name) either by email or telephone to make your views heard. Masterfoods claim they have done it to maintain a standard quality - my response is 'rubbish'! Guest guest
Oh yes - the link! http://www.vegsoc.org/news/2007/mars.html Please make all your veggie friends (and non-veggie) aware. It's not just the principle of changing a once veggie product to non - it's about freedom of choice. Many of my non-veggie friends would not want to eat choc with calves stomach in it. Guest guest
I knew that these were no longer being certified as kosher, but has assumed that had something to do with certification, not ingredients. Ick! Claire <ccteam42 wrote: Oh yes - the link! http://www.vegsoc.org/news/2007/mars.html Please make all your veggie friends (and non-veggie) aware. Guest guest
That's DISGUSTING. " Maintain a standard quality " ? What a corporate, bog standard, meaningless, point-dodging answer. All that implies is " we needed to make sure all the chocolate bars were the same quality as each other " Are they saying their chocolate varied in quality when it had veggie stuff in? No way. It wouldn't have passed all the relevant food standards checks imposed on them by the regulatory people if it varied. It probably just costs more to use the veggie stuff, or they have to jump through more legislatory hoops to use it. Sorry, rant over. Guest guest
Yes, but in this same regard, most cheeses contain rennet as well, so therefore, most cheese is NOT vegetarian. Being vegan, I don't need to worry about that, but if you are worried about rennet in chocolate, you need to worry about it in cheese as well and non vegan vegetarians usually eat cheese.
