Guest guest
Hello, I am looking for foods or meals that are high in protein but not super high in calories. Reason being, I am now pregnant with our second child and although I met the 60 grams of protein a day during the first pregnancy, I gained 50 lbs doing it. Although I was fortunate to lose it all afterwards, this time I want to keep my weight gain a little more reasonable. I'm doing my own research here but I thought I'd see what the group might have to suggest. I'm not a super experienced cook, so if you have a meal suggestion please just type it up like you were sending it to " Cooking For Dummies " or something! Thanks! Guest guest
This is actually pretty simple. Whole grains are the key: whole wheat pasta, quinoa, brown rice are the basics. Add beans, tofu and veggies and you are pretty much done. Congratulations on the new addition to your family! hilbro <hilbro wrote: Hello, I am looking for foods or meals that are high in protein but not super high in calories. Guest guest
Here is a great resource for protein information.. maybe this can help you. Table 2 towards the bottom gives good nutritional information. I have found that shiratake noodles, tofu noodles, smell awful until you rinse them, but only 20 calories and great protein. I also love quinoa salads, hummus- made light on the tahini, made a great guacamame which is edamame and avocado to get the protein and folic acid with reduced fat.. Check it out and see if the site helps. Paige http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm _____ On Behalf Of hilbro Thursday, July 19, 2007 5:31 AM [Norton AntiSpam] High protein without high calories? I work out a lot, and my favorite after-workout drink consists of soymilk, water, banana, blueberries, raspberries, and rice protein powder (24 grams worth). It's yummy and would help with your protein needs. Sheri
Guest guest
Thanks guys for your suggestions and that website link you sent is really great Paige! And I've never heard of rice protein powder (this must show some ignorance). I wouldn't have even considered a protein powder because I really thought they were all soy, which I plan to avoid too much of because of the estrogen issue (I know there are different respectable opinions about this). If rice protein powder doesn't have the estrogen issues that have been associated with soy, SIGN ME UP! Any brand recommendations? Thanks so much guys! Guest guest
I don't know if anyone has suggested hemp protein powder, but I've seen it around here in even mainstream stores. I've never used a protein powder, but just saw it today so I thought I'd mention it. I've been vegetarian for over 20 years and vegan for about 15. I'm in my last trimester with my third vegan pregnancy. I never took protein powders or even worried about protein. I eat a varied diet and protein is always the least of my worries. I do make sure to get DHA and B12, but that is about it. I workout, bike, walk miles a day, practice yoga, etc. throughout my pregnancies and I've never had an issue with low protein. I've also gained different amounts and never had an issue with losing after the births. I gained 20 lbs with my first and 50 lbs with my second and I'm in between this pregnancy. Enjoy your pregnancy!! Linda --- hilbro <hilbro wrote: > Thanks guys for your suggestions and that website > link you sent is > really great Paige! Hilary: I use NutriBiotic rice protein: http://tinyurl.com/2s7mm9 Whole Foods carries it. It comes in vanilla, chocolate, mixed berry, and plain. I love the vanilla!!
