Flaxseed and hempseed for Baby

Dear All,

My baby girl now is 14 months and vegan since my

pregnancy, so I'm quite worried about the source for

her Omega 3 and B12. Though now, she is as healthy as

her non vegan friend ( even healthier I think ), only

a bit small in size compare to her daddy'n family :-)

But anyway, her size is ok to me as long as it suite

the growth chart.

I take flaxseed capsule daily, but it stated not for

below 02 years old.

So , is there anyone know flaxseed oil or hempseed oil

for baby ?! If possible, please share the product name

and where can i find in Sydney :-)

Thanks a million.

Cheers

Jeni

Jeni,

little ones are terrible innefficient at changing the short chain omega 3s in

flax or hemp into

the long chain omega 3s (DHA) because their bodies are designed to get preformed

DHA

(already converted by mom) in breast milk. if your little one is no longer

nursing, i would

consider a DHA supplement (vegan algae-derived) supplement instead of flax oil

or hemp oil.

dr. fuhrman has a good one on his website (www.drfuhrman.com). i think the

dosage he

recommends for the under 2 set is .25ml or about 1/4 or a dropperful.

hope this helps!

Thanks to Karen for her helpful post on omega-3s. You also asked

about vitamin B12 so I wanted to weigh in on that. It's very

important for vegan babies to have a daily reliable source of vitamin

B12. If she's still nursing and your diet is adequate in vitamin

B12, that could be her source. After weaning, reliable sources of

vitamin B12 include soymilk fortified with vitamin B12, fortified

breakfast cereals (check the label), and a vitamin B12 supplement.

The Vegetarian Resource Group's website has more information about

vitamin B12 at http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/b12.htm and about vegan

babies and children at http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/kids.htm.

Interesting -- thanks, Karen.

At what around age do they get better at DHA conversion?

you know, i don't think anybody can really say exactly... a lot of the research

on omega 3s

is very new. i would think it would be around the time our ancestors were

normally

weaned. i am no anthropologist, but perhaps humans used to nurse until around

four or

so? also, everyone converts at different rates, and each person can convert

differently at

different times. there are a many factors involved i.e. heridetary, age, sex

(women are

generally better converters than men) other dietary factors (too much omega 6

can

interfere w/conversion, other nutrients in the diet assist the conversion

process). so if you

have a healthy diet overall, keeping omega 6 levels from getting too high, you

will convert

better than someone who eats a diet with excessive amounts of omega 6s or who is

missing appropriate levels of other vitamins.

however, i would like to clarify that i wasn't necessarily saying that small

children can't

benefit from flax. i just don't think it is the best source of DHA for them.

it can still be a

good source of the short-chain omega 3s), and also, if given in the form of

freshly ground

flax seed rather than the oil, it is also a good source of protein, fiber, and

especially a

wonderful source of those cancer-fighting lignans. i mix freshly ground flax

seeds into

my childrens' smoothies for these reasons, but i also give them DHA Purity and

myself, i

take the omega-zen-3 vegan DHA capsules, but not religiously. more as an

insurance

policy, like you would take a multi-vitamin. there are also blood tests you can

take to see

if you are converting enough, but you have to find a physician who will give you

one, and

who is also savvy enough on this subject to interpret the results.

hope this helps,

karen

jeni,

make sure your baby is getting enough fat, both DHA and other good fats -

avacados are

very important, also seeds and nuts and nut butters when they get older.

have you read Disease Proof Your Child by Dr. Joel Fuhrman? i think it is a

must read for

raising healthy vegan children.

I think the response to those should be: Hmm, that is very interesting. When

you have a chance will you please get me a copy of the research that backs up

your statement?

I'm reading that book right now and was interested to see that he

advocates introducing nuts at age 9 months, ground and mixed into mushy

foods. He does say to wait until at least two years for peanuts. I would

like to go ahead and give my 15-month old ground nuts because I am

wondering about his iron intake -- any thoughts? Other sources always

seem to say to wait for longer, and we do have a peanut allergy in one

of his siblings.

Glad to hear that as ours practically lived on avocados (and breast

milk). Now she is mad about apples and largely ignores cookies and

candy. I don't mind that at all.

I am certain that many folks will send you information, and you do your own

research, but here are a couple of links:

The book " Raising Vegan Children in a Non Vegan World " is a great resource:
