Vegetarian weaning book?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good vegetarian weaning

book? We're preparing to wean our daughter, Molly, in the next month

or two, and I'm looking for some guidance.

The one book I've already got is great in terms of stages of weaning

(starting with baby rice, then add a bit of pureed fruit, then certain

specific vegetables, then slowly add some protein at lunchtime, etc.

etc.). But most of the protein recipes involve chicken! The author

says that parents planning on weaning a vegetarian baby should have no

trouble but should consult their doctor to make sure the recipes we

give her include complete proteins. My doctor's not a vegetarian, and

I wouldn't trust her advice, I'm afraid. I'd rather have a

well-researched book to consult.

My husband and I are ovo-lacto vegetarians, so we eat organic, local

eggs and cheese--we're in England and participate in a fantastic

weekly organic box delivery scheme that gives us local,

ethically-produced dairy and eggs--but we've both got a history of

allergies, and my husband had childhood asthma and has several food

intolerances, so to play it safe, we'd prefer to start Molly on

lentils, tofu, and other non-animal protein sources, at least for the

first year or two. But we're not sure when and how it's best to

introduce those things. A guidance book with a chapter full of recipes

would be great.

So... any ideas?

Many thanks,

Kerri

Kerri,

My Dr. who is family prac. and ped. suggests starting with veggies then

fruit, and then grains. She studied nutrition before going to med. school. She

has shared with me that she has seen older children with constipation that

started grains too early. So, when we started my son on solid food, we began

with

veggies and fruit, then went to the rice, millet, quinoa, barley, etc then to

legumes like lentils and other beans. Soy was one of the last things, along

with corn and nuts and other more allergenic food like wheat.

Feel free to email me and I'm happy to share more.

We used child-directed weaning; my daughter was 23 months when she decided that

she had had enough (I worked full time). You don't say how old your daughter

is; it sounds like she is still an infant. Maybe your question is really about

introducing solids and not weaning? At this age, solids are more for the

experiece of eating, than nutrition; most of baby's nutrition will continue to

come from breast milk or formula. We introduced one new food at a time,

starting with brown rice cereal; then sweet potatoes, carrots, pears, brown rice

pasta, puffed wheat. Foods to avoid before baby's first birthday (this is off

the top of my head and is not complete): soy, wheat, dairy, egg yolk, berries,

citrus.

You may want to pick up a baby food mill or a mini food processor.

Enjoy your little one!

This isn't really a weaning book so to speak, but in terms of introducing

foods SuperBabyFood book is great. my son's first food was actually

avocado.. there is a great section on what can be introduced first, why and

information on proteins etc.

I would highly recommend the book. And while it is not vegan, it does

provide information for those with vegan diets.

the super baby food book is great for recipes... she's not purely veg, but makes

it quite clear that no kids need meat. I wouldn't follow her suggestions for

the age of weaning, but the recipes are great!

I was going to post something similar to this and the other comment

regarding this book. I *loved* this book and bought it for everyone I knew

who was having a baby. :)

The recipes are great, and I still use them (the skillet dinner/hogepodge

thing - it is so versatile and it's a one dish meal, it's awesome for those

hectic evenings. heh).

It was like my bible for a while, and just the guide of what to intro when

was so helpful when we were in that stage.

I don't know of a book, but I would not start with rice. Start with

vegetables. I've read that is the best thing to start with. I think that

may be a Dr. Sears suggestion.
