Ramkumari,

 

I did find the Indian recipe using turnip. It is however a Punjabi, not

a Gujurati dish. Sorry for misleading you. Anyway, here we go:

Shalgum Saag (Punjabi Turnips)

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

-------- ------------ --------------------------------

8 fresh turnips -- peeled and cut

1 inch ginger -- minced

3 cloves garlic -- minced

2 inches Anaheim chili peppers

1/4 teaspoon sugar

none to very little water

-- For Tempering --

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 onion -- slices

2 tablespoons besan

= chickpea flour

or yellow corn flour

 

Cook the turnips, ginger, garlic, Anaheim pepper and sugar in pressure

cooker for 5 minutes high pressure. Use the slow release method.

 

In the meantime temper the spices. Add the flour and mix well. Add to

cooked turnips. Mix and mash with spatula. Enjoy!

NOTES : I often use a small piece of a green chile (Cayenne or similar)
