Guest guest
I'm not trying to be funny or sarcastic. And I don't want to offend anyone, but I am really curious about this. I was wondering if the vegetarians who don't allow any meat in their home have dogs or cats. If so what do you feed them? All dog food has meat in it...even the dry...and they really need it. They can't live on just veggies like we can. (My dog Maggie, really does love her vegetables though!) Anyways, I hope you're not mad at me for asking. It's just one of those dumb questions that got stuck in my head and wouldn't go away. I hate when that happens. Jan )
Guest guest
Actually there is canned vegetarian dog food, and dogs do fine on a vegetarian diet. Cats, however, are omnivoires. Guest guest
Jan, as one of those who don't let meat into their house, I don't think it's an offensive question at all. When we had cats, they were fed a special prescribed cat food for a condition they had (can't remember its name now), and it contained meat. It's my understanding that cats, unlike humans, require meat to thrive. However, I've always wondered if they can be fed a vegetarian diet containing eggs and dairy and thrive on that. When I was vegan, we lived with many companion chickens and gave their eggs to the skunks and other wild carnivors across the road rather than just throw them away. But possibly I could have fed them to the cats if they hadn't had that condition. I feel that if we choose to be responsible for another animal, we owe that animal a good life. Forcing a cat to live on a vegan diet is not a good life, IMHO. When our last cat died of old age, we chose not to take in any more animals, mostly because we travel a lot. So the " meat in the house " problem is moot for us. Sherry At 06:08 AM 1/6/2006, you wrote: >I'm not trying to be funny or sarcastic. Guest guest
Indeed there is canned veg dogfood, as one member has pointed out. Also vegetarian dog kibble. They do fine on it plus, perhaps, some nice home-cooked veg and some raw bits. Other vegetarians chose to feed their dogs meat because they believe it is best for them, and that is a choice for them to make. This is a controversial topic, obviously, and best left to pet nutrition lists I think :-) Best love, Pat
Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for all of your answers to my question. I didn't realize dogs would be ok on a vegetarian diet. I guess I will have to do more research on it. My dog loves vegetables and pretty much eats the same thing we do, (just some dry dog food for lunch) so I'm glad to know she will be ok without so much meat. I still plan on giving her her dog food to make sure she gets a balanced diet. I do give her Flint River Ranch with no additives or preservatives...and no by products.
