Guest guest
Hi Piers - I just realized that I don't know where you're planning to be in Portugal. Admittedly, it's not easy there - first time we went if we didn't want breakfast food (omelettes) we were out of luck. But happycow does have some places listed that are veg or veg-friendly - http://www.happycow.net/europe/portugal/index.html Also, in the tourist spots (we never went south of Lisbon - we like the North and all that stuff near and beyond Porto) they have heard of vegetarians. To save ourselves grief, we eat ovo-lacto when in Europe - and we'd picnic (outside or inside) for a meal when all else failed - good crusty bread, fruit, cheese. I say this, not remembering whether or not you have given away the dairy thing :-( Anyway, good luck - and let us know how it goes! I love Portugal! Even if 'dining' meant all too often having the ubiquitous omelette! Great place for a holiday! Thanks for support and info Pat! Well the district we're heading for is a very touristy one, the Algarve (tower blocks of holiday apartments each with swimming pool, sort of thing) so Faro in terms of the lists on that site - only 1 entry. But I did find a site with a few more, about 4 (can't remem which site). Since I'm the only one of the party following a veggy life style I guess the info about how to survive in daily life is more important, looking for a nice veggy restaurant will probably not be part of the programme this time. All part of a long term plan for investigating countries that might be suitable for hibernation or even emigration, this time just to take a quick look and sample the atmosphere (we happened to have a friend in Algarve, hence ... ) - maybe try north Portugal another time (heeding your recommendation)! Re the ubiquitous omelette, no i'm not against dairy but have dramatically cut down on the eggs. I guess if there's an interesting local cheese I won't be able to resist giving it a try! Guest guest
Algarve is not the place to be if you are a vegeterian/or (worse! ) vegan. But they do have nice cheese (although quite a strong taste) and good vegetable soup. I would always eat the appetizers - bread, olives, and cheese, and a soup if I was lucky enough. However, after 10 days in Portugal I couldn't stand cheese anymore + put on weight .
