Thank you for your comments, but my doctor IS the

person who put me on the fat-free diet. It is a

drastic step to help prevent a surgery I cannot

afford, and it is not a permanent (or voluntary)

choice. It's just hard to find fat-free foods that are

high in calories. I've had semi-plausible suggestions

like drinking a lite beer a day or protein shakes.

It's no big deal, I just wasn't expecting to gain weight.

That's what I figured from your first post :-) Not an easy thing to do, is it? I

was there once

for several months (not because of gall bladder, but it's a long story) - I

didn't really gain

or lose weight, as I recall - maybe a slight loss. But I got healthier!!!

I think we should all understand that now. You aren't the only one on this list

with gall

bladder probs, btw - and of course there is always someone to give the witch's

warning

about our needing fat - but you do what you must do as must we all. <hugs>

Yes, and doesn't it *seem* strange to have to up the calories in order *not* to

gain weight.

And of course exercise will be difficult with you while you're feeling unwell. .

.. .

Hang in there. First thing is to get that gall bladder behaving itself, right?

Write and let us

know how you're getting on - don't go back into lurkdom! It's nice to hear from

you ;-)

Big hugs and love,

Pat

Kathleen and Pat,

thank you so much for your kind suggestions and I

really appreciate you both taking the time to type out

such long and helpful information. I am going to the

grocery store tomorrow and plan on getting the items

that were mentioned. I have always have stomach

problems (chronic heartburn, acid reflux, a hylated

hernia, ulcers, etc.) but I have never been in as much

pain as my gallbladder has caused me. Frankly, it's

scary as he** and I have no one to talk about it with,

aside from my physician. Obviously, I cannot be

calling him every time I have a stab of pain. It helps

to know that there is someone on this list who has

encountered the same problems.

I am feeling much better since starting the fat-free

diet, except I tire out easily. But you're right, I

have basically no appetite. Hopefully, this will

improve in time.

Again, thank you both so much for responding so

elaborately and kindly to my post. I shall not fall

into lurkdom :-) Perhaps one of these days, my poor

addled brain will come up with something to contribute

to the group, LOL.

Kathleen I think knows more about it and can be more helpful than I. (You've

got lots of moral support from me though!).

Well good - not the tiredness, of course, but good about feeling better. That's

great news!

Well I thought you WERE contributing to the group! What do you call this if not

contributing? Lots of others, still in lurkdom, will benefit from hearing your

experience and

from being able, like yourself, to benefit from the excellent advice of other

members! ;-)

Ya see? LOL

Chat again soon? Take care and feel well soon!

Love, Pat (A day later, it is: did you have a good shopping trip for all those

goodies?)

Hi Sylvia,

sorry i'm late to reply to this. I'm catching up on a few posts. I'm sorry

to hear you're having such a hard time at the moment. Trying to cut out or

reduce fat is hard enough without trying to balance what you eat in order to

get enough calories. Its normally the other way around.

I have always found http://www.fatfreevegan.com/ to be very useful. Perhaps

you could tell us a bit more about what you're eating (If it's not too

personal) and we may be able to suggest some things you could try.

It does seem like having too few calories may be stopping you from losing

weight. To maintain weight the Dept of Health here in the UK recommend your

intake shoud be 1940 calories a day if you are a woman with a low activity

level. Generally the figures if you're trying to lose weight tend to be

1500 - 1800 calories per day depending on how much you have to lose. This

site may help you work out how many calories you should be consuming to lose

weight - http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/logout/calorie_intake.htm

There is a yummy recipe for Fat free banana bread which might be good to

snack on - it should boost your calories but not your fat content. Its at

http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-recipes/breads/ff-banana-bread.htm

I hope some of that was helpful and do ask any more questions you have.

Take care,

Laura x
