Guest guest
Hi Yvette and All, I am also new to the list. My name is Chris and I've been moving toward becoming a vegan for about a year. There have been times when it's been difficult to give up things like dairy, but the difference in how I feel emotionally and physically when I do not consume animal products is tremendous. I highly recommend Neil Barnard's Turn Off the Fat Genes: http://pcrm.safeshopper.com/8/127.htm?465 The title makes it sound like a " fad diet " book, but it is not. It's a wonderful explanation regarding the dynamics of nutrition and the recipes are fabulous. I tried the three-week program he illustrates and lost 16 pounds. Barnard's writing is accessible and more important, not condescending. :-) Warm regards, Chris Yvette wrote: > Hello all, my name is Yvette, I am in Los Angeles, Ca. Guest guest
Zena, Yvette & Chris, Well, finally someone has posted to this group! I " joined " a couple of weeks ago and no one responded. In the meantime, I discovered John Robbins' organization, EarthSave, International, a nonprofit organization that supports healthy food choices (especially vegetarianism). I'm reading his second book, " Reclaiming Our Health, " which is about taking charge of your own health and some of the things the medical community, big pharma, etc. have done (especially to women and children). His first book had to do with becoming vegetarian ( " Diet for a New America " ). I haven't read it yet, but plan to read when I finish this one. Anyway, at his website, they have a program for beginning vegetarians, vegans, or whatever stage you are at. (I'm currently veggie, but still eat fish, as I'm still learning and afraid I won't get enough protein). Some of the vegetarian " meats " (I prefer Morningstar) are delicious, especially the Breakfast patties and veggie burgers. There are other meat substitutes and more grocery stores are carrying them. There are a lot of other packaged foods you can buy, but I hope to get away from those when I learn more about recipes, etc. (and I haven't lost any weight!!) Anyway, maybe we can help each other -- that's what this group is for, right?? Coleen Chris Taylor <cloudbursting wrote: Hi Yvette and All, I am also new to the list. Guest guest
Thank you Chris and nice to meet you. I will have to find this book, I am a little afraid that the vegan lifestyle would be too strict for me especially at the beginning. Maybe not though, I'll never know until I try. Thanks again, Yvette Chris Taylor <cloudbursting wrote: Hi Yvette and All, I am also new to the list. My name is Chris and I've been moving toward becoming a vegan for about a year. Guest guest
Wow Coleen, Thanks, I need to learn about it myself, I too am afraid that I won't get the protein that I need. I just joined a gym and need energy. It's hard to be part of a group that's not active. Hopefully those of us that are interested in helping and motivating each other can keep it going. Sincerely, Yvette Coleen <cece4184 wrote: Zena, Yvette & Chris, Well, finally someone has posted to this group! I " joined " a couple of weeks ago and no one responded. Guest guest
Hi to all the new members. I'm fairly new myself. I'm Paula, and I'm 53 yrs old--also on the road to becoming totally veg. Both sons are moving out this August to attend college, so that's going to make it a bit easier. I live in TExas--HOT here now! I belong to the Y and love to work out. I lost 27 pounds on WW plan last year and so far have kept it off, but some times it's a struggle...LOL. I found WW to work out very well with a veg diet. So glad to see some enthusiastic posters in here! Guest guest
Hi Paula, Nice to meet you!! I am so excited about getting started. So are you eating Veg now or somewhat veggie? Guest guest
Hi Yvette, I have to say " somewhat " veggie. I eat veggie at home, but not always when out eating at others homes. I'm also trying to cut down on dairy. I use soymilk and have been experimenting with different soy cheeses...none I'm happy with so far--just rather do without....LOL. When I was losing weight with WW, I was eating a lot of no-fat refried beans, boca burgers, beans etc. for my main protein. Plus tons of good veggies like broccoli and snowpeas in stirfries. Also found some good wraps that were low point value called " flat out lights " and there are also some other good low carb wraps out there that are high in fiber and very tasty with salad and beans rolled up inside. I'm a " volume " eater. I like to have a huge salad, or a huge stirfry, or a huge bowl of popcorn. Something that fills me up, but still healthy and within daily weight loss plans. Thanks for writing! Paula , Yvette Hughley <weebabydove wrote: > > Hi Paula, > > Nice to meet you!! I am so excited about getting started. Guest guest
I went to Dr. McDougall's website and am very excited about starting his 12-day program. I printed out the daily menus. Most of the foods I already love & eat -- whole grains, oatmeal, veggies & fruits. No dairy or eggs. I'm hoping it will help with some of my health problems, such as depression, fatigue, joint pain, etc., etc. He says it doesn't even matter if you eat the same thing all the time and there is also an excellent discussion of the whole protein/calcium argument. (Apparently there is plenty in the carb foods on the diet.) Coleen Paula <paulakward wrote: Hi Yvette, I have to say " somewhat " veggie. Guest guest
Hi Coleen, Thanks for the tip. I did a Google and found this: http://www.drmcdougall.com/free_1.html looks to have lots of good advice and the recipes I checked out looked very good. Have you started it yet? How's everyone doing? Guest guest
I'm sorry, I meant to put the website in my message -- well, maybe it will help with my memory, too!
