Guest guest
Hi, as this group is called vegetarianslimming, I thought I would talk more about the slimming part. I need to lose 75 lbs to get to a normal weight range. Even more you could say but 75 would get me in that range. I am not a vegetarian but am interested. Is anyone actively losing weight here? This might sound corny as it says vegetarianslimming, but how are you losing your weight? Counting calories, Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers (anything like that), low carb or just eating vegetarian dishes? I would love to hear more about others and the other side of this group, the " slimming part " . Feel free to email me privately if you are not yet ready to discuss in front of a group. Thanks! Thanks for writing this message It's so easy to get off track, isn't it? You're quite right of course, and of course eating vegetarian dishes does not make one lose weight in itself. You need to eat low-fat (no cups of heavy cream in the lasagna, for example!) and keep sugar and 'white' carbs at bay. Unfortunately, no everyone who joins a 'slimming' group is keen on slimming but might be just interested in what the group is doing (or whatever motive) and not all are actually vegetarian - not by a long shot LOL I would be sorry if members could not feel free to discuss on Vegetarian Slimming the kind of vegetarian weight-loss diet they are on! (But I appreciate Julie's delicacy in suggesting offlist responses). So please, please let's discuss this on list, okay?? Thanks again, Julie. Love to you all. Guest guest
Hi Julie, I'm TRYING to lose weight...eating the low-fat, veggie lifestyle. It is just more satisfying to me than eating lean meats with veggies. I have just started, so I have only lost 5 pounds. Just using veggie recipies does not automatically mean you will lose weight. You have to be careful on what recipies to use. For instance, in Veggie Times there are plenty of very high fat recipies...such as tofu choc pudding/pie, etc. You need to look for the recipies that call for less fat...which is not hard...and stay away from high fat/sugar type of foods. You CAN do this just on your own, but if you are a person that needs support, WW or JC is a good way to go. However, they are based on more meat type meals, so finding veggie menus can be difficult. I belong to Spark People and have found lots of veggie recipies on there...plus in VT mag, the internet is FULL of veggie recipies...as well as this list. I have 100+ pounds to lose...and I try and take it one meal at a time. Plan my meals..and have NO JUNK FOOD in the house! My challenge is going out to eat, but thankfully, there are plenty of FF rest that now offer veggie things...like Subway's veggie delight sandwich. Yum Yum! I hope this answers your question. Please keep asking questions and use this list for support! Good luck to you! Nancy _____ On Behalf Of julie.kingsley Wednesday, September 13, 2006 9:15 AM Anyone losing weight? Guest guest
Hi Julie ~ I've been a vegetarian for almost 2 years. I started doing Weight Watchers about 6 weeks ago and have been losing weight. Even before my partner and I started WW we were making a conscious decision to eat more fresh, local produce and less pre-processed stuff. We've also cut back on caffeine intake I'd say about 85% and I think that has helped as well. There are healthy and not so healthy ways to be vegetarian. Just beware a lot of cheese and pasta and potatoes as your main ingredients and try for more fresh veggies and tofu or beans for protein. Good luck ~ Cindi " julie.kingsley " <julie.kingsley wrote: Hi, as this group is called vegetarianslimming, I thought I would talk more about the slimming part. Guest guest
Hey Julie I am yes doing the dieting thing. Yes I have a goal weight that is 100 pounds away yet darn it. Yes I also am following the Richard Simmons deal a meal thing turned it in to a vegetarian deal a meal and so far it is working pretty good for me. I had no clue on portions or how many of what I needed to eat to be more healthy in a day. I am still trying to find the right vitamins I need but that is off the topic here. I also got some wonderful advice from the group and I bought so home exercise videos and have gotten the nerve up to walking outside once a week. I know this may sound silly to you but it was a huge accomplishment for me. I am glad you asked on this because yes it is part of this group and it is a hard part to over come weight loss I mean. As I am learning I am not alone in this battle and neither are you and to me that helps more than any kind of diet I could go on every would. Can I ask you what meal plan are you thinking of doing and why. Just being nosy you don't have to tell me. I wish you well in all your efforts remember your not alone. Guest guest
Thanks Laura, Yup you are very right I started out not even getting past the warm up sections and now I am able to do most of them all the way through. I also have learned how to laugh at myself and my two left feet and no coordination what so ever. So the old saying that if I can do it any one can really does fit me to a tee in this case. my goal for exercise by next year is to be able to do the walk a thons for cancer or diabetes fund raisers. Does any one else have exercise goals they want to share? Hey while I am here and asking stuff does anyone have low salt marinades for tofu I have one and it uses soy sauce in it and I am very low salt tollerance but love my tofu and want to find some new ways to make it. Plus does tofu freeze? katie Laura <lpiwowarski wrote: katie brown wrote: > > > I also got some wonderful advice from the group and I bought so home > exercise videos and have gotten the nerve up to walking outside once a > week. Guest guest
Hi Katie ~ About your question about tofu freezing...Yes, it does and it changes the texture too. We actually have some frozen right now we will thaw this afternoon for a chili we're making tonight. Freezing tofu gives it a much thicker/chewier texture. As far as the marinade, most I use all contain soy sauce. I will keep an eye out though. Guest guest
Hi Katie, I don't know about any low-salt marinades, although I have used balsamic vinegar with a little sesame oil and it's pretty good. I do know that tofu definitely freezes. It gives it a more dense, chewy texture that's kind of nice actually. My exercise goal is to be consistent. I tend to go a few months where I barely exercise at all and then I'll be really dedicated for a few months, etc. I also wanted to say...don't be overwhelmed by your goal! Try to focus on small goals, like losing 10 pounds, or fitting into some tight pair of pants. My story: I started a few years ago (not a vegetarian) at 226 pounds, lost a lot, got down to 145, have since gone back to 165, where I have been for the past year or so. Now I'd like to lose that last 20 back again. Focus on small changes to your eating and small exercise additions and small goals. That will keep your weight loss much more steady and long-lasting. You can do it!! , katie brown <evil_child_is_back wrote: > > Thanks Laura, > Yup you are very right I started out not even getting past the warm up sections and now I am able to do most of them all the way through. > I also have learned how to laugh at myself and my two left feet and no coordination what so ever. Guest guest
Wow thanks for the great ideas and encouragement. After I read your post I got to thinking that hey why not use my salad dressings as a marinade. No salt in them. It never even occurred to me to even try it so thanks. So when you say tofu gets chewier does that mean it is more like a meat texture or a cheese curd kind and does it crumble easy then like frozen cheese does. Sorry for all the questions I was just wondering how far I could push it to pulling off taking a tofu dish to work and folks not knowing it was tofu in there. I am the only veggie eater there and so it is rough when we have pot lucks and all I can eat from is the fruit and veggie tray. Plus then every one knows I am dieting so it has another added frustration to potlucks. Sorry for the rambling. I have set up a reward system for every 10 pounds lost I am shopping for some thing 10 dollars or less. I am a plant nut so I can imagine my first treat will be a new violet I have been wanting to buy. I like your goal of exercise consistency. We all need that. I have not been at my l exercise program all that long so I am still doing ok but I can see how it can easy become hard to keep going after months of the same thing. Hope you are having a good day.
