Katie,

If you like sweet things, maybe you can eat more fruit. I know that is

what Dr. Fuhrman recommends in his books. His diet is vegan and similar

to Dr. McDougall except he advises unlimited fruit and limits the

starches to one cup per day, and also unlimited beans. Dr. McD limits

beans to one cup, and says unlimited starches and limits fruits to one

per day if you have problems losing weight. Anyway, Dr. F says we like

sweets and should eat lots of fruit to satisfy the sweet craving. I

don't know for sure what works best, I like my potatoes too! If your

triglycerides are high, you need to limit sweets and fruits, according

to Dr. McDougall.

Anyway, if you like oatmeal you might want to try putting lots of fruit

in it. I make Crockpot Oats with tart cherries and also sometimes with

apples and cinnamon. I used to put some maple syrup in when eating it

but now find I am liking it just fine with no extra sweetening. Your

tastes will adjust, it just takes time.

Here is my Crockpot Oats recipe, you may have to vary the water amounts

according to your own crockpot's idiosyncrasies.

2 cups whole oats (from health food store, or use rolled oats)

4 cups frozen fruit, any kind, or 4 cups apples

6 cups water

At bedtime, put all in the crockpot on low setting.

Cherry pie crockpot oats: use frozen tart cherries and 2 tsp almond extract

Apple pie: 4 cups apples, 2 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/4 tsp. ginger

pumpkin: 1 small can pumpkin, 1 Tbsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg

apple and pumpkin, 2 cups apples, 1 can pumpkin, spices to taste

raisin: 1 cup raisins, 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp. vanilla

Thanks for sharing this, Laura! It looks like it makes a ton, though.

How well do leftovers work?

This keeps well all week in the refrigerator. I'm pretty much the only

one here who eats this, and this much lasts about 6 days or so.

Laura,

These are wonderful crock pot recipes. I think I will try the apple pumpkins

first it sounds the best of all but then it is a hard choice.

I have a long history of diabetis in my family so I am trying to avoid getting

it and while I love fruits a lot I am not overdoing them so much. More out of

fear than honestly anything else. I know that is why I started the fake sugars

too. when I think on it I really am not a sweet craver I just think I need it.

Like the salt thing was for me I got out of the salt shaker years ago and now

gag on some things because of the salt. Talk about gaining weight over night my

last salt blow up I gained 6 pounds over night from a small bag of chips and dip

I was served at some ones house. NEVER again will I eat some thing just to be

polite.

Anyway I really took the off ramp there on the topic sorry.

I will definatey try these all out.
