Does anyone know of and experienced with any online software (logging

diet and exercise stuff) to aid this podgy vegan to shed an armful of

pounds?

I am prepared to pay if it is worthwhile - evey penny spent on that is

a penny less on vegan chocolate.

I particularly like Fitday. I think it's www.fitday.com, if you are

interested. There is a free online version, but I went ahead and bought

the download for like 20 dollars, and IMO it's well worth it. You can

enter in custom foods, although there are some things that it doesn't

have, in it's food library, like sea salt, but that's not a big deal. I

love it and use it every day. If I'm brutally honest with my food

diary, I can see exactly why I'm not losing weight. There are also logs

for weight, body measurements, BMI calculations, and activity, and you

can see how many calories you burn and how many you take in. Very

interesting and kind of fun to use!

Thanks Laura,

I've bookmarked it as I'm about to go on holiday, and I might as

well start a continuous use on my return.

I suppose I'll have to learn American ways of measuring ;)

There is also www.myfooddiary.com I love that site. It really helps keep track

of what your eating, burning, calorie count, exercise and the like. It's $9.00 a

month to use it. Which I think is well worth it.

Hi Geoff

You don't need any expensive software to shed weight :-) You need to

get out and walk a lot more, take up swimming, abstain from dairy and

bread and kick in with increases of fruit and veges, less rice and

pasta particularly low/no carbs at night time. You will lose weight in

no time, and just relax don't stress, be healthy and take your time.

Thanks Vida, funnily enough for the last 2 years I've walked more than

10,000 paces each day and I cycle approx 70 miles per week in hilly

country. I've abstained from dairy for over 30 years and eat copious

amounts of fruit maybe too much. It's the last bit that is driving me

to consider using software to discover how many calories I burn

compared to intake.

Hi Geoff

How do you eat your fruit? And what else do you eat every day?

Obviously there is more energy intake than outtake... there is

definitely something you are consuming too much of. Do you eat

candy/chocolate/pastries etc? What about alcohol?

Actually, if you are looking for a way to track your calorie intake and energy

output, you can go to www.mypyramidtracker.gov - you enter everything you ate

and everything you did, and it will give you calories, nutrient info - they will

even grade your nutrition intake with little smiley faces. And it's totally

free, compliments of the US Department of Agriculture.

I just went to this site and they told me to;

consult a healthcare provider about weight loss strategies prior to starting a

weight-reduction program

Hey Laura,

After some scary talk about my raised blood pressure from my doctor,

coupled with advice to shed a stone or more over the next 3 months, I

went ahead with the free online version of that FitDay program you

recommended. My online link, as Ambit, is

http://tinyurl.com/yl8bmp

What extras do you get from buying the software? The online free

version seems quite comprehensive.

I HIGHLY recommend www.sparkpeople.com. It has

meal/calorie tracking, exercise tracking, articles,

recipes, and a huge community which is very veg

friendly (the " calling all vegetarians and vegans "

message board is in the top ten in members and

activity). I found it to be really helpful in keeping

me on track.

I like the sound of sparkpeople, and so I registered. But when I

started to change the foods given as default to the ones I actually

scoffed, I ran into problems. I usually wolf down a bowl of porridge

for breakfast -especially in winter. I couldn't find a way to change

the given foods to porridge. I'm sure it must be possible what with

millions of folk using the system - it must be me.

On the other hand Fitday is very userfriendly. Although I don't like

the way I seem to be eating way too much. You mean I can't just have

a handful of nuts everytime I pass the tub in the kitchen? Bah humbug.

The meal plans on sparkpeople are, in my opinion, less than helpful,

especially if you don't eat dairy like me. I just turn off the meal

plans and enter everything manually. When you are first setting up

your account, when they are asking you about your weight, exercise

commitment, dietary restrictions, etc, right above where you can

select your meal plan options, is a box to uncheck if you don't want

the meal plans. I think that's what you are asking?

Rachael the genius. I hadn't spotted that check box. I will gallop over

there and uncheck it immediately. Besides, like you, not sucking in

dairy cuts out many of their list. Also living across the pond means

there are many foods I've not heard of, or with different meanings! So

being able to write in my own seems a splendid idea. Cheers.
