Cooking, Anyone?

Does anyone else have lots of recipes but end up eating the sam-o, same-

o all the time (i.e., out of a can, potato, etc.)?? I decided I'm

going to get out one or two of my recipes and buy the ingredients, keep

the ingredients (non-perishable, of course) out where I can see them

with the recipe and actually cook them this weekend! If anyone else

has any other ideas to get on the ball as far as trying new recipes,

please let me know. And I'll post the recipes after I try them.

P.S. I live alone, so there isn't much incentive to cook, though I do

enjoy it when I have the time.

HI Coleen ~

Yes, I find it hard sometimes. This past week we selected 4 recipes to make

for the week and have made 2; beans & rice in the slow cooker (an easy

standby/favorite) and then last night I (finally) made us a corn & cashew curry

that we've been wanting. And it was yummy! Gonna have the rest for dinner

tonight probably.

What we normally do is go through our cookbooks and find some lower cal meals

to make for the week and make a grocery list so. We try to do this on Friday so

we can hit the Farmers Market on Saturday but that doesn't always happen so I've

been grabbing some low fat soups or chili for backups. We get new cookbooks

farily often so that helps the exciting part, looking through them and finding

hidden gems. Our same-o same-o recipes are the easy ones that don't take too

much prep and I know how they're gonna turn out. LIke the Spanish Rice & Beans

in the slow cooker, Almost Irish Stew in the slow cookers, sweet & sour tofu &

veggies. It is very easy to get into a rut!!

Your incentive could be a yummy meal from scratch that you made yourself! :-)

I know, not enough sometimes. Got anyone you could invite over for dinner?

Treat yourself to a new cookbook. I got a wok cookbook awhile back that got

heavily used when we got it and that's actually where last night's curry recipe

came from.

Cooking for yourself should be enough incentive to cook well-no

complaining and only cook what you like. Come on you can do it

Actually my problem is just the opposite - sooo many recipes, so little time. I

make a new recipe almost every day. I have a ridiculous pantry & only need to

buy fresh veggies & dairy. I buy most beans & such bulk & store them in big

jars. It's almost embarrassing how much food is in this house. But variety is

the spice of life, eh? Another thing to stock up on is condiments. I think I

have every flavor Tabasco available. I have tamarind in every form availalable.

I'm a terrible hoarder, too, if you hadn't guessed. And no, I don't have a big

house. But it's fun to see a recipe & be able to make it without too much fuss.

I was in a cooking game where we had to make many many recipes & a lot of people

were cooking for themselves or for 2 people. They would cook & after tasting

the dish for the review, they would take the food to a soup kitchen, nursing

home - someplace to offer the food to other people. I thought that was a

brilliant idea. So I say, HAPPY

COOKING!!!

Thanks for the great ideas, Cindi. I also recently bought a slow-cooker, so I'm

actively looking for vegan recipes for that. I assume the Spanish rice, etc.

recipes are posted in the Recipes section?

You have the right idea. I flip through the recipe books and find something

different that I've never tried before. I then write down those ingredients on

my list. Then I plan the rest of the week around our favorite dishes. We

incorporate the dishes we love and we've expanded our menu quite a bit this way.
