I'm TinTexas on vegweb and this topic came up and I find it disturbing

that so many of the vegans have an eating disorder. What do y'all

think?

Working for me :)

I agree, this discussion on vegweb is very disturbing - and even the idea that

EDNOS

sufferers 'become vegan' to cover up their eating disorder (ie. already have a

problem that

makes them ill) doesn't really help. While it can't be extrapolated from the

discussion on

vegweb that it is veganism which is the problem, it certainly throws some light

on why so

many non-vegans think of a vegan lifestyle as being unhealthy: because so many

people

decide to become 'vegan' so that they can refuse food.

I don't know anyone like that, but I know few vegans (except cyber friends)

these days

except for my dh and myself.

Love, Pat

OK, I went back and reviewed the thread. It is simply a few people

making comments. It has no meaning. Go to the vegan weightlifting group if

you'd like to read something scientific.

I don't need scientific data, I know that a vegan diet is perhaps the healthiest

diet if you do it correctly and sanely. I guess what I'm concerned with is that

veganism is used to cover up a major psychological problem. For me, it puts a

shade of doubt over all the discussions of veganism. Is the person just hiding

behind a facade of concern for the cruelty done to farm animals when they are

doing awful things to themselves. I wonder how really widespread anorexia and

bulemina are among those who are vegan. I guess is probably

not the place to ask about it since if we weren't in need of losing weight we

wouldn't be participating. I don't think I could ever get so obsessed with

controlling my weight that I'd develop a eating disorder but how about the rest

of you?

For me, this issue isn't just about animals, although

I have to admit that even though I go fishing as a

sport, the idea of cleaning any of the fish that I

catch and eatting them bothers me.

For me the idea of being vegetarian has to do with

being healthy instead. I know that my son eats out of

my sight at school, and eats mostly healthy, but at

home, most of what we cook is vegan or vegetarian now.

He realizes that, but it's not an animal issue to

him.

I started eating a vegetarian diet as a way to become healthier, however, the

further away I get from eating meat, the more disgusting the idea becomes to me.

I didn't expect that to happen, but I'm not sorry that it did.
