Guest guest
I was told by my doc this week that my triglycerides are too high - 218!!!! ICKKKK!!!!!! I'm vegan, and thought I was doing pretty well with my diet - BUT - my doc says to cut back on white starchy stuff, sugars, and fats, as well as increase my exercise. This isn't the first time (other docs as well) I've been told this - apparently I fluctuate up into the danger zone a bit too easily. I guess it's time to accept that I have to commit myself to some serious life changes. Anyway - I was referred to the " Vegan Freak " website because he recently had a similar thing happen with him - he thought he was doing well, but then a routine exam resulted in a diagnosis of diabetes, high cholesterol and high triglycerides!! Yikes!! He and his wife have done a podcast show on it - it's show #66. They discuss what they've done to lower his levels back into the health zone, as well as have a great interview with a vegetarian nutritionist! http://veganfreakradio.com/ Check it out! Guest guest
If I remember right, that is fairly common on Ornish's diet. You might want to read up a bit on it. Guest guest
Yes, high triglycerides when on a low fat vegetarian diet. Guest guest
Hello, I recently joined and thought I'd add that I am a big fan of the vegan freak podcast! I became vegan about 2 months ago, so I'm still learning to find foods I can enjoy and still lose weight. Through other methods, I've lost 91 pounds before going vegan. I had hit a plateau back in November (one of several during the weight loss, so I wasn't overly concerned) and thought it might start moving again since I went vegan, but so far it hasn't. I have 69 pounds to go yet. So I'm looking for any helpful suggestions or ideas. Glad to get to know you all. Guest guest
> Yes, high triglycerides when on a low fat vegetarian diet. That's odd. Could you explain that, please? Or direct me to a site or source that would explain? Thanks a bunch Love, Pat
Guest guest
The connection has been known since the fifties: http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/links/doi/10.1046/j.1525-1373.2000.22520.x/full\ /?cookieSet=1 http://www.healingdaily.com/conditions/triglycerides.htm You should decrease sugars and refined carbs, like the doctor said, but don't decrease all fats. Increasing omega 3 intake will help decrease triglycerides. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4632 http://www.aafp.org/afp/20040701/133.html Pam On 4/21/07, Pat <drpatsant wrote: > > > Yes, high triglycerides when on a low fat vegetarian diet. > > That's odd. Guest guest
Thanks for the links - always good to know where people are coming from. I have looked at them and will re-read in detail later. (Unfortunately, a couple of the links were promoting a non-vegetarian solution to a high triglyceride problem - eg. consumption of f*sh.) Actually, my query was about your statement: > > Yes, high triglycerides when on a low fat vegetarian diet. It was *low fat* and *vegetarian* put together which prompted my query. I don't see that (as yet) in the links. Omega 3 is of course what they're talking about - not just any old fat Thanks for responding. Interesting topic! I'll see if I can find it another way. Love, Pat
Guest guest
Arggh. That was a good article, too, from a good source. Here are some more that do refer specifically to Ornish: http://www.fatfree.com/archive/1998/jun/msg00105.html (not great, but refers back to Ornish's published works on the subject) http://adam.about.com/reports/000043_1.htm This one does not mention Ornish or vegetarian, but " very low fat diet " (you really don't get 10%-15% fat if you are eating meat): http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1998/09/980902054055.htm Ditto this one, though a number of Ornish's works are footnoted: http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/98/9/935 I am by no means an expert on this, nor am I trying to promote non-veg eating. This was discussed far more regularly when I was on the fat-free list ten years or more ago, before omega 3 supplements became popular. If I remember rightly, Ornish states that this is only a *temporary* rise in triglycerides, and that it will go down again once you have been on the diet for long enough. As I say, this was before all of the benefits of omega 3's were well-known, and Ornish himself was still on the fence as to whether they would be helpful or harmful to the diet. He now endorses omega 3 supplements even on the reversal diet; though not for anyone currently in congestive heart failure. While fish is mentioned in some of the articles, you can get omega 3's without eating fish or fish products. Flax (ALA) and algae (DHA) are common sources. That's what one would expect, I think. Good. That explains things a bit > While fish is mentioned in some of the articles, you can get omega 3's > without eating fish or fish products. For myself, I use flax oil and spirulina on a daily basis, quite apart from any other omega 3s I might get along the way OK, now going to read all those lovely articles you sent links to! Much appreciated!!!! Hugs and love, Pat
