Having been convinced years ago that the best oil for drizzling on my

salads or for light cooking is Extra Virgin Olive Oil, I am now

confused. The fields ae ablaze with the golden yellow of rape plants. A

farmer on TV said that in the Extra Virgin Rape seed oil, the omega

fats are monosaturated and not only as good as Extra Virgin Olive oil

but better.

Maybe there is no significance difference? Does anyone know?

Rapeseed oil or canola oil is not monounsaturated, it is polyunsaturated.

It is a better choice than saturated or trans fats, and is probably better

for you than peanut, safflower, sunflower, etc. It does have a higher

concentration of omega 3's than those other oils, but is not a great source

for omega 3's. I would say it is probably a toss-up between rapeseed and

olive oil. In either case, I would look for a cold-pressed product. In a

dish that you do not want the olive flavour, go with rapeseed.

I would also highly recommend flax seed (or linseed, depending where you

live) for its high ratio of omega 3's.

If you use cold-pressed oils, make sure you store them in the fridge.

You do not want to use flax oil, as it degrades at those temps. Olive or

canola/rapeseed would be my recommendation.

Thanks Pam for your advice.

I've got used to the taste of Extra virgin Olive oil especially the

lighter coloured very refined brands from Italy. Even so I might give

Extra Virgin Rapeseed oil a go because it is produced locally (from

the crop in a field I can see from my bedroom!) here in Cheshire, UK,

and it creates a lower carbon footprint, environmental pollution etc

to buy local.

Having said that my local greengrocer buys in Californian lettuce in

winter!
