Guest guest
Has anyone read the vegan weight loss book " Skinny Bitch " ? The two authors come off rough and tough and throw in a more than a dash of profanity. But their ideas are straight on and it's well worth putting up with a bit of what would be verbal abuse if someone were to talk directly to your face like that. I love the book. Chapter 6 made me cry though. You'll have to get the book to find out what chapter 6 is all about. (I have no financial interest in it and don't know them personally, of course.) As for me, I had surgery to remove my thyroid on 6/6 and tomorrow I go and have the steri-strip removed from over the incision site. Hopefully, I'll get the OK to go back to exercising. I am forbidden to do any strenuous activity until I get the dr.'s OK. Frankly, it's just been in the last couple of days that I've even felt like considering it! The recovery has been a bit more difficult than I anticipated. But I haven't gained any weight! I'm being eased on to a full dose of thyroid hormones gradually and once I can exercise, it's on. Full battle against the bulge!
Guest guest
> Has anyone read the vegan weight loss book " Skinny Bitch " ? Hi Hon, No I haven't read it, and I don't know much about it except what I've found on the web. But I see it is vegan (a good idea, as you knew I'd say LOL) and advocates healthy eating including whole grains (rather than refined). What it does seem, however, is a diet that allows more fat than some others that people on this group follow (this being, as I keep saying for the benefit of newbies) a low-fat group. Since you have read the book, you'd be able to tell me if my assumption is wrong. I'm going by the sample menu I saw. And I'm looking for professional opinions of the book - pleased to see John Robbins' approval Love, Pat
Guest guest
Regarding the low fat thing, I must say that I get a bit concerned when I see people trying to achieve a *no* fat diet. Even vegans need a very small amount of good polyunsaturated fats in their diet. It is a very small amount that is needed but some is needed. Everyone please don't eliminate **every trace of fat** from your diet and maintain that diet for a long period of time! You'll damage yourself. Please note that I'm emphasizing **every trace** and not advocating pouring 3 tablespoons of olive oil on your pasta. Half a tablespoon of good EVOO in a recipe for four servings of pasta is still low fat and a good, healthy thing! Need a vacation? Get great deals to amazing places on Travel. Even vegans need a very small amount of good polyunsaturated fats in their diet. . . . Thanks, hon. But no one here was advocating a no-fat diet. Some of us produce recipes with 'no added fat' (which sometimes gets quickly short-handed into 'fat-free'0, but that's a different kind of thing, isn't it It would be rather hard, come to think of it, to have a *no* fat diet. Vegetables, legumes and grains have fat IN them - how else would you get corn oil, peanut oil, etc. - and most vegans take something like ground flaxseed each day to keep on the safe side. On the contrary, rather than advocating a no-fat diet we are a group which caters to those on a LOW-fat diet, as I stated. We always have been. So don't worry I should add, too, that there are some very VERY respected scientific studies - and books written - which show excellent results for keeping all added fats (bar the flaxseed, in most cases I believe) out of the diet. Those interested would be wise to study them - not all are vegetarian, not all are vegan, but . . . . I think particularly, however, of Ornish, McDougall, Barnard, Fuhrman. And for recipes you can't do better than Susan V's blog http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/ and her webpage http://www.fatfreevegan.com/ Love, Pat

Guest guest
Is it just in the UK that the Skinny Bitch book received a boost to pubiicity when former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham was seen with it the other week? http://tinyurl.com/259c2c Of course no one wants to be as skinny as Victoria - she says she was born skinny - but the ideas in the book seem very healthy to me! Guest guest
> . . . the ideas in the book seem very healthy to me! I gotta find the book and give it a good read. If it truly is a healthy AND easily followed vegan nutrition plan which helps people to get 'skinny' (to use what I assume is a tongue-in-cheek expression), then it's something I for one want to know about. I've had it up to my eye teeth with hearing about weightloss diets which don't give a tinker's toss for health! Nice to hear about a change in all that! Has anyone else (apart from tonia) read it yet? Guest guest
I have heard of this book and want to find out mroe about it. I'd like to find out if they know more about being a vegetarian than I do (been one since 73). Not bragging, they just might! Before I spend the money tho, I wish I could get a hint somehow. I too have thyroid problems, tho not surgically removed. I have Hashimotos.
