Guest guest
It came to my attention that vegetarians may be deficient in L- carnitine (most sources are from red me*t). I am having a bit of trouble finding more information about this deficiency, and if vegetarians need to be particularly concerned. I wonder if any of you can supply me with more information and/or links. Thanks.
Guest guest
Carnitine is not an " essential " amino acid. Your body can produce it using lysine and methionine. Carnitine can be found in nuts<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nut_%28fruit%29>and seeds <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seed> (e.g. pumpkin<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumpkin>, sunflower <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunflower>, sesame<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sesame>), legumes <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legume> or pulses<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse_%28legume%29>( beans <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bean>, peas<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pea>, lentils <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lentil>, peanuts<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut>), vegetables <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetables> (artichokes<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_artichoke>, asparagus <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asparagus>, beet greens<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beet>, broccoli <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broccoli>, brussels sprouts<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brussels_sprouts>, collard greens <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collard_greens>, garlic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garlic>, mustard greens <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustard_plant#Mustard_greens>, okra <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okra>, parsley<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parsley>), fruits <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit> (apricots<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apricot>, bananas <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana>), cereals<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cereal>( buckwheat <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckwheat>, corn<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maize>, millet <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millet>, oatmeal<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oatmeal>, rice bran <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bran>, rye<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rye>, whole wheat <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whole_wheat>, wheat bran<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bran>, wheat germ <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_germ>) and other 'health' foods (bee pollen <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee_pollen>, brewer's yeast<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewer%27s_yeast>, carob <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carob>, and kale<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kale>). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnitine#Natural_sources) Lysine can be found in legumes ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysine#Dietary_sources) Methionine can be found in sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, fish, meat, and some seeds. Most fruit and vegetables contain very little; however, some have significant amounts, such as spinach, potatoes, and boiled corn.
