Guest guest
What strategies do you guys use for keeping to your weightloss regimen over holiday seasons when too much yummy-but-fattening food is on offer?? Do you eat before you go somewhere? Skip meals other than the celebratory one in a given day? Pick your way through the lettuce leaves at your own table and others' and ignore the rest? Refuse invitations? Mix only with slimmers? Take your own lettuce-leaf-or-whatever sandwich? Eat along with the rest cuz it's only once or twice a year? Have your jaws wired shut? Something else? Hey, you've gotta have a system, right? Tell us what YOU do! (And, if you like, tell us what you wish you COULD do! (Keep it General Audience/Family Entertainment please folks! LOL Although I do know it's tempting!) Love and hugs, Pat
Guest guest
Plan as much as possible and accept that if we are not cooking then I cannot know what the kcals are for a given meal! but play it safe the rest of the time The Dragon (aka High Priestess Enchanting Evenweave) WIPs/UFOs = Teresa Wentzler, Celtic Summer, exchange 6/10ths done, RRs in progress http://dragonsteel.multiply.com/ http://tempewytch.diaryland.com/
Guest guest
It has been easier for me this year because we recently moved to a different part of the state, so since we don't know anyone here we don't have all of the parties, open houses, etc. that we have had in the past. When I did have to do the party thing, eating something beforehand and just putting one thing on my plate that I carried around with me all evening (so no one noticed or made an issue out of me not eating much) both worked well for me. We do visit family on Christmas Eve and there is a " snack buffet " for lunch and then a big dinner. At Thanksgiving I drank a lot of water, limited my portion sizes on the high cal./high fat items, and took small portions at dinner. I plan to do the same things for Christmas Eve. It's actually a little easier for me since I don't eat the main course anyway--since it is some kind of meat. I still recorded a loss at my weigh-in the week after Thanksgiving, so I guess I did pretty well. On Christmas Day I am at home with just my dh and kids, and I always make a big lunch--whatever the kids want, but it is always veg'n and something I don't make a lot because it is very rich or time consuming or whatever, and it has to be something that everyone in the family likes. I don't know what I am making yet this year, but in the past I've made calzones (dough from scratch and everyone filled their own to their liking), lasagna (half cheese/half tofu, of course), bean & tofu green enchiladas (cheese over half of it), etc. I don't think there is anything wrong with having a few feast days every year (Thanksgiving, Christmas, & Easter for me, but whatever your religious and/or cultural background you have some, too), the problem with the holiday season is that with all the parties and such we end up with multiple feast days and there-in lies the problem. And, the birthday of everyone you know should not be a feast day. It would be nice (in a perfect world) if every party didn't have to center around unhealthy food, but that doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon. I'm looking forward to hearing tips from others! Guest guest
I don't deny myself, but I do limit the amount I eat. One piece of candy. One small slice of pie. Then it's right back to watching the fat and calories. Pat <drpatsant Monday, December 17, 2007 1:51:07 PM QUESTION OF THE SEASON: What Strategies do YOU Use? Guest guest
I¹m a big fan of eating before you go. I never expect that anyone else will have vegan dishes available for me, especially when it¹s a big get-together with lots of people attending. The hostess has enough to do getting ready for that so I don¹t want them to have to worry about having something special for me, too. So I eat before I go, and if I do find a couple of healthy nibblies there, then I¹ll grab a few of those. Tonight, we¹re invited to a friend¹s home for a Christmas dinner with just them and their 2 kids, and my husband and I. So since it¹s just us, they called ahead to clarify what vegans will and won¹t eat, so I am sure she¹ll have something I can eat. Still, I did have a small bowl of veggie soup before we go just in case. The last party we went to my sister-in-law got pizzas for everyone. She proudly exclaimed she had gotten a vegetarian pizza so I could eat. But it had cheeses. I just socialized and had a good time and didn¹t eat, but they soon asked why I wasn¹t eating it. I explained I always eat before so they didn¹t have to go out of their way for me. She said, ³bur we did! We got vegetarian pizza!² I reminded her again that vegans don¹t eat cheese. They seemed a bit put out, but I wasn¹t willing to compromise on that, and I¹ve told her many times what I won¹t eat. I will allow myself a little leeway on Christmas Day at the in-laws. Still vegan, of course, but I won¹t be focusing on fat-free so much on that day. I will make my own dish to bring so that I know there is something vegan to eat ‹ and I always find the others digging in and enjoying it as well, so I bring plenty! For this year, I¹m making jambalaya using a vegan chicken replacement for the meat.
