Guest guest
My husband passed a big kidney stone, the first in years. It is from the vegan diet. His stones are oxylate-based and he is supposed to limit oxylates to 50 mg a day. The fruits and veggies he eats in one day have at least 1000 mg of oxylates in them, which is now causing kidney stones. I don't want him to have to quit the diet. Any ideas? Sorry to say that this isn't a medical group, but some might have anecdotal information to help out. The question of diet and kidney stones it seems is a bit controversial - why is everything controversial? [sigh} - such as info below in this link: http://www.lef.org/news/LefDailyNews.htm?NewsID=1945 & Section=VITAMINS If you google on kidney stones diet (or some such) there are some interesting discussions on it, including one by a character who heard his doc's opinion that vit C was causing them and heralded that as a great excuse not to eat his veggies anymore! [ tee hee]. Good luck - sounds as if your dh has had the problem before, right? Was he always vegan? Just curious. Love, Pat
Guest guest
He had kidney stones a lot when we ate vegan before. The doctor put him on a diet low in calcium/oxylates, and the problem went away. He didn't have a kidney stones in at least ten years until he started Eat to Live two weeks ago. He said he's going to increase his water and his magnesium to see if that helps, as he read that online today. I will lhave him check out the link you provided. Thanks! Oh sheeesh, that is bad news! I'm sorry that it worked out like that (no pun intended). I didn't know kidney stones developed so quickly, though. Shows what I know about medicine. > He said he's going to increase his water and his magnesium to see if > that helps, as he read that online today. Yes, I read that too - especially useful in the summer - the water part anyway, I don't know about the rest. I was looking in various books I have about kidney stones and this kind of diet, but didn't have any luck. Let us know if you find out anything useful, okay? > I will lhave him check out the link you provided. Oh that one more or less said that vit C wasn't the culprit (I think). But there are lots of other sites. As I say, a google search will do it until you've read more about kidney stones than anyone wants to know, including sufferers Best to your dh - and of course to yourself on the diet. Enjoying it?
