I understand that rats are the *exception* to the

warning that no pets should be fed avocado since

it is poisonous to them. From one site:

" The avocado is very dangerous to all animals Ð

the fruit, leaves, stem, and pit are all

considered toxic parts of the plant. The toxic

substance in the Avocado is called persin, which

is a fatty acid derivative. Although poisonous to

both cats and dogs, this plant is particularly

deadly to birds. This is also a proven poison to

various other types of animals including: goats,

sheep, horses, cattle, rabbits and even fish!

Ingestion of the avocado plant can lead to

cardiovascular problems, and often results in

death. This plant is highly toxic, and in animals

symptoms can range vomiting, diarrhea,

respiratory distress, generalized congestion,

fluid accumulation around the heart, and heart

failure. The avocado is deadly and should not be

fed to any pet under any circumstances. "

Therefore, presuming that Geoff wants to catch

the mouse alive out of compassion for its life

rather than the pleasure of tormenting it, I

would suggest he find another kind of bait. I

wish I could help with a suggestion. I do

understand that they like apples and carrots,

however. Good luck!!!! :)

Love and hugs, Pat

Do you think mice and rats are that different?

*does a bit of research*

Several sites lump rat and mice care together and suggest avocados.

These include the site of the American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association

and The Rat and Mouse Club of America.

This Purdue University page about avocados says:

" Avocados have no major insect enemies in Florida but migrating cedar

waxwings feed on leaves, flowers and very young fruits and the fruits

are commonly attacked by squirrels, rats and mice. "

and later says that the unripe flesh and the seeds are poisonous to mice.

One site I stumbled across in researching talked about humane trapping

and advised against peanut butter, almond butter, etc. because rats

and mice are unable to vomit and can choke themselves on thick paste

foods. (I don't give my rats nut butters but I did have a wild rat

once that kept sneaking into my kitchen and eating my almond butter.)

Thanks very much, Pat. Isn't that another great example of why

experimenting on animals doesn't always result in benefits for humans?

Imagine a vivisectionist discovering avocado is poisonous to the

control rats and thus declaring that fruit as off limits for humans

too.

Thanks too Sparrow for suggesting changing the new plastic smell of

the trap. I hadn't thought of that one.

There are so many examples!

About the avocado, I have actually seen places on

the net where they mention mashed avocado for

mice (I think mice, not rats). Perhaps it's the

unripe avocado that is toxic, or only toxic in

large quantities, or only really the seed and

leaves toxic but the advisors are playing safe,

or whatever. I truly don't know. I just know that

after reading avocado is unsafe for pets I do not

let either of my little dogs have even a smidgin

of it. (Not that they got much before - it's too

fatty for one of them and I try to keep their

treats equal. Besides, their mom and dad like

them too much.)

Back to your post: Down with vivisectionists.

It's a grotesque practice. (I'm a Shavian at

heart.)

Pleased that you're posting more, Geoff. It's

always good to hear from you. I know you're busy,

but drop in when you can, okay? :)

Love and hugs, Pat
