Guest guest
Welcome, Linda! A veggie for 29 years? That's fantastic. I should think we all have much to learn from you! As for going more vegan, as you say you wish to do, you should get lots of help here; many members are vegan, either newly minted or oldtimers and can probably help you if only you would let us know what it is you want to know. Okay? Nice that you're into exercise too. While some people think it's not needed to lose weight, I think it does. And it is certainly needed to be healthy! Fyi, my dh and I changed over from ovo-lacto veg to vegan just a few years ago - so slowly that we have actually lost the moment when it actually happened or was decided Painless really, looking back at it. It can be tricky when eating outside the home, however, which of course won't be a problem for you. What's your bird? We have no birds but do have a couple of beagles and a cat who thinks he's a dog. Good luck - and let's here from you often, okay? One can lose weight without exercise, but a significant portion of the weight lost that way will be muscle. Losing muscle not only reduces strength, it lowers the metabolism, making it increasingly more difficult to keep the weight off and lose more. So, what you said! Exercise is important, too. And from all I've read, we need two kinds of exercise, not just one. We need both cardio and strength training. Some workouts do both - for example, some of the " Walk Away the Pounds " include work with a therapy band that adds strength training to the cardio. And I'm currently working with Neena and Veena's Bellydance Core Conditioning which has both cardio and strength training (enough that I can't do the program every day because I have to give my muscles a chance to rest.) Guest guest
Thanks and I have only been a veggie for 19 years hope I did not type that wrong it happens LOL. I have a cockatiel who runs the show here he is a hoot and just a general good buddy to have being a widow and many miles from family he is my family :-)))) I am not sure how to get rid of the yogurt -of which I do like and then there are some cheeses that is my biggest hurdle. Oh and I do like egg whites now and then but I could do tofu for that easily. I scramble my eggs anyway. Other than that I really don't have a problem. I eat dairy mainly for protein, and since I have a thyroid issue I have been sort of careful about the soy stuff. That is the rumor anyway about soy and thyroid as I love 8th Continent or Silk soy milk. Mmmmmmm. I have changed my eating a lot the last few months to pretty much 99% no junk at all and I feel terrific! I plan to be on here quite a bit as my journey continues. Thanks for the welcome! Guest guest
Oh I totally agree and I get the strength exercise on my pilates reformer it works with my weight and resistance bands you do feel that. The walking is also going to get better. I just got a new treadmill yesterday and it takes the iFit cards so I have a personal trainer working the treadmill and I get a whole lot better workout than I was on my old treadmill of 14 years with thousands of miles on it LOL. It was wore out and the incline on this is fantastic. It even tells me if I am in weightloss mode! How nice is that. So I get cardio that way too as it also gives your aerobic workouts and performance, endurance etc. Just nice. I think you need to exercise for your body and eat correctly to take care of it. I have seen the results of not taking care of it where I work it is not pretty. I am very lucky also I rarely if ever get sick but I do take care of myself also so this group is just another step on the journey. It even tells me > if I am in weightloss mode! How nice is that. Ooh! You have nice equipment! I am in envy. :-) Seriously! I use therapy bands that someone gave me and I " pump water " (as opposed to pumping iron) by using 4-pound jugs of water as handweights. I'm very " low-tech " right now, but I am in total envy of your new treadmill! > I think you need to exercise for your body and eat correctly to take care of it. > I have seen the results of not taking care of it where I work it is not pretty. I think that can be one of the biggest wake-up calls! I see the results of bad diet and lack of exercise every day as my husband is very stubborn about not changing his diet and he can't exercise anymore because of his chronic illnesses (which are genetic and life-long so there's no talking to him there, either.) Taking care of the chronically ill can certainly be a great inspiration for practicing good nutrition and exercise one's self! > I am very lucky also I rarely if ever get sick but I do take care of myself > also so this group is just another step on the journey. I'm so glad you're here, Linda! I think I will learn a lot from you. Welcome! Sparrow
Guest guest
> Thanks and I have only been a veggie for 19 > years hope I did not type that wrong it happens > LOL. Apologies! 19 years is good!!!!! > I have a cockatiel who runs the show here he is > a hoot and just a general good buddy to have > being a widow and many miles from family he is > my family :-)))) Companion animals are wonderful - they keep us busy, up to the mark and happy, are non-judgemental in their appraisal of us as well as unstinting in their love. I know many disagree, but as long as we have domesticated some species and they need homes, it is wonderful to rescue them and give them a good life for what years remain. Our own three animal companions are the joy of our lives - and I cannot say that often enough. > I am not sure how to get rid of the yogurt -of > which I do like There are soy yogurts, although not available everywhere. You could train your tastebuds to enjoy them. > and then there are some cheeses > that is my biggest hurdle. OK - that's a big hurdle. Those of us who have given it up, however, wouldn't thank anyone for real cheese now - it tastes too fatty. Of course, you can't exactly take a chunk of soy cheez and have it on a cracker the way you can with dairy - it's mostly for putting/grating *in* things or sprinkling over some baked dishes. I skip it now and just occasionally, if I remember, add a 'cheezy' taste (since I've now forgotten what the dairy version tastes like) to dishes that used to be made with dairy cheese. Some members might have hints on how to get around this craving, though >Oh and I do like egg > whites now and then but I could do tofu for > that easily. I scramble my eggs anyway. So no problem there > Other than that I really don't have a problem. > I eat dairy mainly for protein, and since I > have a thyroid issue I have been sort of > careful about the soy stuff. My dh and I get our protein from the vegetables we eat (it's hard to find something that doesn't have protein!) and from legumes (all kinds of beans and all kinds of lentils) and grains (again, all kinds). No need to eat soy or drink soymilk for protein if you're worried about the effects of soy on your particular health problem - lots of other ways to get your protein fix. Also, you might want to consider other kinds of non-dairy milks. Almond milk and rice milk are both awesome!!!!! Some people love oat milk too, but I can't remember if I have ever tried it. I'm sure it would work fine for breakfast, for example. > I have changed my eating a lot the last few > months to pretty much 99% no junk at all and I > feel terrific! > I plan to be on here quite a bit as my journey > continues. Well good for you! It's good that you feel so good after changing your way of eating. That's a wonderful side effect of veganism (and before that vegetarianism) for me! Chat again soon!
