Thank you, shakarsastry, for trying to help Rupa, but you have overlooked an

important

part of Rupa's message - the need to avoid foods high in purine.

Shankarsastry adds:

> 3. eat curries and plenty of plain yougurt mixed and blended

> with water and a pinch of salt.

Okay, as long as the curries don't contain vegetables forbidden because of the

medical

complaint. (Some vegetables, eg. cauliflower, are modertely high in purines too)

I'd also

suggest that the curries use as little ghee or oil as possible (this IS a

low-fat group, you

know :) Please try to remember, okay?). As for yoghurt, all milk products have

low purine,

but I'd suggest for weightloss and health that you use low-fat yoghurt - it is

readily

available in Canada, I see. (Just check the ingredients on the package. I have

seen yoghurt

with gelatin in it!)

And Shankarsastry says:

I beg to differ with this opinion - in the extreme. A healthy diet is what DOES

help to

reduce weight - and exercise helps to burn off a FEW extra calories and to build

muscle

tone, stronger bones, etc. Please have a look at the files you were sent upon

joining. (If

you can't find them, then let me know privately and I will re-send them to you -

both, if

needed :)

And later:

> 4. eat chana and soya bean curries

Rupa has been diagnosed as needing to AVOID foods that are high in purine - eg

most

beans are in the 'moderately high' category.

Now I am not a medical practitioner, health care worker or nutritionist - so

this is just

from information accessable to us all on the net and in books. (We do not give

medical

advice on this group, nor do we suggest that any member go against the medical

advice

he or she has received.) The cautions here are based on the information Rupa

provided

and should not, except for the comments on fats and oils, apply to anyone who

has no

problem with high or moderately high purine content.

Okay, Rupa, there are lots of good things out there for you to eat - wonderful

grains, all

the non-purine-rich vegetables, fruits, grains, bread, pasta, etc etc etc

You should be up for a culinary adventure! Good luck with it. And write in often

to tell us

how you're going. And let us know what you ARE allowed to eat (according to your

medical

advisor) so that we can make good suggestions for recipes, menus, etc., which

will keep

you well AND help you to lose weight!!!

Love and hugs,

Pat

It is possible that you are both saying the same thing but using the

words a little differently. I have seen many people say " dieting

doesn't work " but when I've looked more closely at their full message,

what they are saying is something more like " special fad diets that

you go on to lose weight and then go off of again when you reach your

goal weight don't work because you are eating unnaturally during the

diet and then regain all your weight when you go off the diet. "

There is a difference between " diet " as in " I eat a healthy diet " and

" diet " as in " I'm on Stanley Schnarble's Maraschino Cherry Diet. "

Some " dieting " can even be hazardous to your health but a healthy

" diet " *is* what reduces weight and I suspect (though I could be

wrong) that both Pat and Shankarsastry are saying the latter, not the

former (though they still may differ as to personal definitions of

what comprises a healthy diet.)
