Peter,

I have ta bite me tongue here er else Fraggle will take a swipe at

me :)

Soooo.....

Polar Bear I.Q.

Success at hunting seals may not be measured on a standard I. Q.

test, but scientist Alison Ames considers it a sign of the polar

bear's brain power.

As part of a study funded by the Universities Federation for Animal

Welfare, Ames researched the behavior of captive polar bears in

British zoos. She has seen her subjects stack heaps of pipes that

they later knock over in elaborate games. She has also watched them

smash open ice blocks in order to extract imbedded fish.

Her conclusion: the great white bears are just as smart as apes.

" This is learned behavior and reveals that polar bears are very

intelligent animals, " Ames told the London Observer. " They are highly

cognitive creatures that top the food chain in polar regions. You

have to be very clever to do that. Hunting and trapping a seal is no

easy matter. "

Because of the polar bear's intelligence, Ames favors a move away

from the concrete cages of the past. " [Polar bears] respond well to

stimulating environments, " she says. " They like areas of sand, grass,

and hard ground in their enclosures. "

BLACK BEARS

Black bears are characterized as shy, secretive animals possessing

considerable curiosity and displaying high levels of intelligence and

exploratory behavior. Black bears are generally active in the early

morning and late evening; they may alter their activity pattern to

exploit sources of artificial food, becoming nocturnal at camp

grounds and dump sites. Nuisance activities are nearly always

associated with artificial food sources (beehives, campgrounds, and

livestock).

GRIZZLY OR BROWN BEARS

Brown or Grizzly bears have adapted to diverse habitats; from the

Arctic tundra to the edges of the Gobi Desert. Wherever they live

though, they have the same requirements as other animals; adequate

food, shelter, protection from predators, and the opportunity to find

a mate and produce offspring. Although tigers, wolves, and mountain

lions may have the ability to kill brown bears (especially cubs)

their only real enemy is man. And men are such effective killers of

bears that even though an area may have everything else that brown

bears need, if it is easily accessible to people, brown bears will

probably not use it. The exception to this is in areas where bears

are totally protected such as National Parks. In these areas, where

bears have not learned to immediately fear humans, they are able to

coexist with man.\par }{\plain \tab Bears are very intelligent

animals; the experience of zookeepers and animal trainers indicate

that they are smarter than dogs. This intelligence has enabled them

to live in extreme environmental conditions and to exploit and learn

an encyclopaedic array of food species and local places. They spend

several years with their mother learning from her what plants are

good to eat and where to find them. They also learn by themselves

from experimentation. Orphaned cubs have learned how to catch and eat

salmon on their own. By the time that subadult bears leave their

mothers and take off on their own they know what plant foods are

available at each time of the season, and they know what habitats are

likely to have those foods over a very large area. As they leave

their mothers and move into new areas they learn and remember where

food is available. This knowledge is critical. Food sources change

drastically from year to year depending upon weather and climate. A

grizzly bear is often required to remember a type of food and where

it was found that it may have last encountered ten or more years

earlier.

Hi Nikki

I'm *very* tempted to just say that he's a Polar Bear, but I guess that

would just wind you up :o)

He's one of Dangermouse's pals.

Hi Nikki

You must know about Dangermouse? Surely you have Dangermouse in the US?

Well, in case not: he's a mouse with an eye patch who lives in a postbox

(mailbox for the US folk) in Downing Street with his sidekick: a mole called

Penfold who once had to give his eyebrows to a Martian to save the Earth

from destruction. They get their missions from a badger (I think he's a

badger) called Colonel K.

> and is he really dangerous?

That depends if you happen to be an evil toad! Just to clarify -

Dangermouse's arch enemy is Baron Greenback - an evil toad with a pet fluffy

albino caterpillar called Nero. His sidekick is a crow with an Italian

accent called Stilleto. Ocassionally Count Duckula - the vegetarian vampire

duck - crops up!

Count Duckula later got his own series!

Now do you understand who agent 57 is?

O yes!

It all makes perfect sense now! :)

Can honestly say I have never heard of Dangermouse, but it may be

possible we have him still.

Will definately start asking around!

Thx Peter!
