interesting that pope innocent considered abstention from

meat 'heresy'....

Ah, little lord J, so much to answer for, and those naughty punks

ya should read about it if it might interest you

albigensian crusade..think i spelt it right...anyways...started i believe 1209

AD...

northern knights and rabble decended on southern france..slaughtered entire

towns...

the cathars disbelieved in the fact that jesus died on the cross, since he

wasn't material..its a strange christian sect, but, women played a vital role in

it, so, it got a lot of converts...

the priests were known as parfaits, traveled in pairs, vows of poverty...

the sect was rumored to come from the town of albi, hence the name albigensian

crusade...also related to the bogomils...

and..the knights templar...

anyways..the crusade went on fer like 50 yrs er something

you've heard the term " kill them all, let god sort them out " ? comes from this

crusade...

isn't it loverly?

*sigh*

I know that song too. It's slightly exaggerated! I believe the figure is

nearer 9,000. Now, people executed for heresy is a slightly different

matter!

That's intriguing - considering that many of the monastic orders abstained

from meat!

Wasn't he the same Pope who said " kill them all - God will know his own " ?

Hi Fraggle

> the cathars disbelieved in the fact that jesus died on the cross, since he

wasn't material.

More to the point - they simply believed that Jesus wasn't the son of God.

Their belief was based on a dual god scenario - God was the creator of

spirit, and " Rex Mundi " was the creator of the physical world which they

considered evil.

An offshoot of the Cathars later set up in Bulgaria, and were known as the

" Bulgar " sect. Because they believed that the material world was evil, their

greatest sin was to have sexual intercourse which could produce offspring,

so they only ever indulged in anal sex. It is this sect that gave rise to

the term " Buggary " (i.e. Bulgar - y).

I've heard the 9 million figure elsewhere as well, though I can't

claim to be an expert- when you consider that the era of the witch

hunts lasted some 300 years, 9000 wouldn't have been that many, tho

maybe the 9 million figure isn't making a distinction

between 'heretics' & 'witches'?

the 9 million figure comes from a man named gerald garner i believe

Witchcraze: A New History of the European Witch Hunts, Anne Llewellyn Barstow,

Pandora 1995.

from 1550 to 1600 AD

                       Accused                 Executed

Holy Roman Empire      ~100,000+                ~50,000+

Poland                     ?                     ~15,000+

France                   10,000+                  5,000+

British Isles

  England                  2,000                  ~1,000

  Scotland               3,069                   1,337+

  Ireland                    0                       0

  New England              334                      35

Scandinavia              ~5,000                   1,500-1,800

Hungary                  ~1,600                     472

Spain                     3,687                     100+

Italy                    ~2,200+                      0?

The Holy Roman Empire figure includes the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg,

Switzerland, and parts of modern France, as well as Germany and Austria.

Remember that Poland was a huge country back then as well. Both Catholic and

Protestant states persecuted witches - this was one issue on which they were in

agreement. The low number of executions in Italy and Spain is interesting - the

Spanish Inquisition was more interested in heretics and in relapsed converts

from Judaism, Islam, etc. than in accusations of witchcraft.

In most areas most of the victims (roughly 3/4) were female. Notable exceptions

include Finland, Estonia and Russia, but the total numbers from these countries

are not large.

I think the 9 million includes heretics. For what it's worth, I know that in

England a little over 400 peaople found guilty of witchcraft were hanged. In

Wales 3 were condemned, but 2 escaped before sentence was carried out, so

only one Welsh witch was ever hanged!

Hi Angie

> Was he one of them who slept around ???

I suspect so!

I think my favourite example of a Pope ignoring the rules of his own religion due to his own preferences was Boniface VIII, who stated that "homosexuality is no more a sin than rubbing your hands together". While I don't disagree with him, it wasn't the usual attitude preached by the church!
