Hi Ann

Welcome to the group, and to veganism :-)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by animal prints - but if they aren't made

from animals, then I don't personally see any problems. FWIW, if you already

have them, giving them away or destroying them isn't going to help the

animals.

Hi Ann

If you like them and you already have them - then wear them and enjoy. I am

still wearing leather shoes that I bought years ago. I will not buy any

more, but would not throw away those I already have. I think with animal

prints it is slightly different, because presumably they are made from

non-animal material, so there is no cruelty involved. I think it comes into

the same category as faux furs. Although I like faux fur, I haven't bought

any because of the same worries you have, so I shall be interested in the

comments from others.

here's how i see it...... you wearing faux fur shows

people that you can still have the style without

killing the animal.... so i don't see why it would be

sending a bad message at all...i would think it would

be a very positive message.. :)

Except........

People see the style, like it, and don't care about the animals'

suffering, so go one " better " and buy the real thing. This was

brought home to me by the owners of a hunting, shooting and fishing

shop, when I was debating the morality of their patrons' " hobbies " .

They pointed out to me that if it was not for women wanting to look

as I did (I was wearing a fake fur coat) there would be no market for

skins. Humanity simply cannot be trusted. I feel the same way about

fake leather. Until we as a species lose the idea that animals are

commodities, they will continue to suffer. If I wear fake leather,

unless I explain to everyone with whom I come into contact that it

*is* fake, that it just *looks* real, then I am perpetuating the idea

that wearing animal skin is acceptable.

Personally I avoid all such things like the plague. Animal prints

are a more subtle form of reinforcement, but why do it anyway? Wear

them until they wear out then don't replace would be my advice.

A newborn baby human's skin is the most divine texture in the world,

but who amongst us would feel comfortable wearing faux baby skin? I

would like to see the same unease about animal skin. Fakes won't do

that.

Cheers

Cathy,

I think you bring up a good counter-point, but I also believe that

most people buying a leather or fur coat would be doing so anyways.

And if someone was admiring another person's fake, normally they say

something to that person like, Wow! What a beatuful coat. In which

turn we could always say Why Thank You! It's fake! As I could never

kill another living thing for the pure satisfaction of wearing

something to make me look more attractive. And then starts either an

enlightening conversation (we hopes) or a short one!

I don't wear them myself, but still see no reason wrong with it. If

someone sees me eating a soyburger with fake cheese, the same

scenario pretty much stands true there too.

It's a toss-up in my eyes and I think up to each individual with what

they feel most comfortable with.

Hi Cathy

I see your point as well. I was really referring to something in a bright

colour, say, that is obviously fun, and nothing to do with fur.

Viv,

Personally I think you can wear whatever you want. I think it is an

individual choice and if you are comfortable, than why not. I could

Of course she can wear whatever she wants. She's human - she has all

the choices.

I use to think I could never give up cheese. I underestimated myself.

No animal suffers to produce non-skin materials, as far as I know.

That's fine if all you're interested in is keeping your conscience

clear. But if you want to start to change attitudes, which is the

only thing that will bring about a lessening of animal suffering,

then in my humble(ish) opinion, you have to go a little further. As

I said before, nobody wil know that they are not leather.

But, at then end of the day, people will do whatever suits them. We

always have.

Good Morning Cathy!

:)

As I said before, I think you have a good point on this. But if I am

wearing my boots and someone says to me, hey, nice boots! I can then

say, yep! And they're pleather.

What's pleather?

Why, it's imitation leather!

Oh!

Yes, I wear these beautiful boots and no animals were harmed. PLUS! I

spend 1/4 of the cost and can donate some of that money to the

animals.

Why, ya don't say

er something like that

but, if ya don't wear these - no one will know that it is because you

are an animal rights activist

-not saying that you should wear them

just saying that there are so many lines to cross and crosses to bear

and we do these all fer our beliefs

and no matter what anyone believes I feel they are all right if tru

to themselves.

so iu refuse to feel guilty about my fashion choices when I am making

those decisions with a clear concious

so kudos to you fer yer beliefs

and keep making yer points, because many here I am sure agree with you

and that's ok

tis what makes us all individuals

Hi Nikki

Nothing I have said should be construed as an attack on you or Viv

(she'd probably beat me up anyway!)

Having said which - I have to say that in 20 years of wearing non-

animal shoes, not once has anyone ever commented and thus given me

the opportunity of declaring them to be cruelty-free. Still, maybe

you wear more attractive footwear than me.

Cheers
