Guest guest
So, what's the deal--I'm a 22-year-old " sXe " vegan animal rights activist, but I don't particularly care for hardcore music. Is there something wrong with me? I'm always looking for friends with similar interests, but we usually part ways when it comes to them being really into going to emo shows or whatever. I prefer avant- garde/experimental music. My question isn't so much " Am I the only one? " but more " What is the link between distored, over-amplified guitars with screaming and practicing a lifestyle that reduces suffering? " --May all beings be free of suffering.--
Guest guest
Hi Paul Welcome to the group :-) > " What is the link between distored, over-amplified > guitars with screaming and practicing a lifestyle that reduces > suffering? " Personally, I don't like Hardcore either - I like progressive and melodic metal / rock. I think there is a certain correlation because many of the hardcore groups are " straight-edge " , and actively promote a vegan /environmentally friendly lifestyle, which does tend to draw people with similar ethics to their music. Guest guest
Hi Paul I don't know what the link is. I like a little of the hardcore, but am mainly a metal fan. Lots of the hunt sabs I know are into 'ambient' music, so I guess there is a little spread of tastes. It sounds that music is important to you, as it is to me, so good luck in finding friends with similar tastes. Jo --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
Hi Paul and welcome! Not sure of the connection, but I grew up with and love metal (hard and not-so hard) and punk. But I can also listen at times to almost anything else. nikki , " Paul Szewczyk " <five_khandhas> wrote: > So, what's the deal--I'm a 22-year-old " sXe " vegan animal rights > activist, but I don't particularly care for hardcore music. Guest guest
Hiya! Just picking up a thread on music, seems you'd like Hugo Largo. Mimi Goese still releases as solo, and electic-violinmeister Han Rowe produces and was on David Byrne's album. Get hold of 'Second Skin' probably the most'beautiful'of'punk'songs. I spend quite some time feeling pretty negative about the human race's motives and behaviourism, but our capacity for music-making is breath- taking! Still haven't heard a hardcore speed-metal'recorder album!(amp it up and distort the muther out of it,it could work!!!)The band? St.Winifred's Skool Massacre? Whatever your sound,we get the message. LOL - but I don't think it'll be long. We've got Apocalyptica who do some pretty heavy stuff on cellos, and when you get Pat Boone covering Metallica and Black Sabbath, anything can happen! Guest guest
I'm kind of close to sXe although not completely as I will occasionally have an alcoholic drink (not often though), I am anti- drugs and hate cigarette smoke too. I'm definitely a vegan for animal rights reasons and used to be involved in all that before I had children. I also don't like loud music, just anything catchy and never dressed outlandish either. I see no connection at all between liking a particular type of music and being either sXe (or quite close and sympathetic to it) or vegan or both. Relax, you are not the only one who has pondered this question! Guest guest
I'd agree with that. Most punks are not afraid to be 'unusual'. Guest guest
I only run into hardcore/punk music when trying to find vegan peers to hang out with. As far as music goes, three of my favorite living musicians are vegan: Philip Glass, Moby, and " Weird Al " Yankovic. I have a " VEGAN " t-shirt which has been signed by Philip Glass and Weird Al, but I think Moby is too popular now for me to be able to get him to sign it. Guest guest
I was open to veganism and questioned lots of other things simply because I didn't like the idea of killing or causing suffering, I was not being different in my views just for the sake of being shocking the way punx like the Sex Pistols were, but for a good ethical reason, so it did not make me the sort of person who liked music that was loud, tuneless and full of obscenities, nor did it make me want to stick safety pins through my earlobes or other places about my person thanks very much! That all seems a bit masochistic to me actually. I think most vegans just look like ordinary people, and vegan punx are just one noticeable minority group among vegans, but they are very much a tiny minority. Guest guest
i disagree, but, wot can i say i would say in this area, punx and all the subcultures that entitle it make up a clear majority of vegans and veggies... Guest guest
Punks are normal people. And the Sex Pistols are not the only punks. And some of the music I like has obscenities in it, but I like the music, I didn't go searching for obscenities. And lots of punk doesn't have obscenities in it - a lot of it is just fun. Actually I don't think punk is meant to be shocking nowadays, but I'm not the expert. Jo I was open to veganism and questioned lots of other things simply because I didn't like the idea of killing or causing suffering, I was not being different in my views just for the sake of being shocking the way punx like the Sex Pistols were, but for a good ethical reason, so it did not make me the sort of person who liked music that was loud, tuneless and full of obscenities, nor did it make me want to stick safety pins through my earlobes or other places about my person thanks very much! Guest guest
Yes, I can see that you are all crazy. Anyway, I don't have anything against punk music or punks--I was with a punk girl for 3 1/2 years. I went to *one* show with her and I found it intolerably boring. But then I had my revenge when I took her to a Moby show, which she despised. She liked the Philip Glass operas better, however...
