Guest guest
Today I was diagnosed with having a severe iron and calcium deficency. I currently take an iron pill but it's evidently not working. I also take a multi-vitamin. I was told to get Citrical for the calcuim and the dr. office has access to a liquid plant based iron suppliment that is supposedly good, but it's $50 for a 3 oz. bottle!! Does anyone know any good ways to get my iron and calcium up through both food and/or suppliments that are CHEAP cause I am super broke. I spend my last $60 on my recent trips to doctors and I still have mirgraine, virtigo and don't sleep well...never ends with me does it. ~Mel mucho x-posting going down!! _______________________________ Express yourself with Y! Guest guest
Hmm, I don't know a whole lot about nutrition, but I'm thinking leafy greens are supposed to be really high in iron. Examples are spinach, kale, and broccoli. I read that in order to absorb iron in plant foods you need to include a source of Vitaminc C in your meal. Hope that helps! Guest guest
Would a kale and potato dish be a candidate for this (with the iron and Vit. C) cause i eat quite a bit of this. Usually with steammed brocoli, carrots and grean beans... Also curious since I have a high amount of Vit. C in my system. I just don't seem to absorb the iron...or calcium for that matter. --- Aimee <aimeeleigh79 wrote: > > Hmm, I don't know a whole lot about nutrition, but > I'm thinking leafy > greens are supposed to be really high in iron. > Examples are spinach, > kale, and broccoli. Guest guest
First off let me just say i am so sorry you aren't feeling well, Melissa. That must be aweful. i have already read thru some of the responses from others here, so i know you are getting some useful ideas. But one ther food item that we have added to our diets for extra iron is molasses; you can add this to fruit shakes or to your cream of wheat cereal and it is delicious. i hope you can get your health issues resolved soon. It is no fun feeling so terrible and i empathize with you right now. ~ pt ~ Until we have learned to stand Grand Canyon deep in the earth, we shouldn't even think of setting foot on the moon or Mars. ~ John Moriarty, 'Turtle Was Gone a Long Time' ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~> , Melissa Hill <assilembob> wrote: > Today I was diagnosed with having a severe iron and > calcium deficency. Guest guest
Hi Mellisa, I would recommend that you include at least 1 portion of pulses to your daily diet as they are high in iron (1 cup provides about 5-6 mg of iron which is around a third of the RDA). Also try to include foods that contain vitamin C with every meal (vegetables, salad, orange juice, ribena) as it helps make the hard to absorb non-haem iron become more easily absorpable. Spinach (and other green leafy vegetables) is a moderate source of iron and calcium so keep eating it! Fortified breakfast cereals also include good levels of iron and calcium. Dry fruits also contain moderate amounts of iron. Tofu is a good source of calcium (1/2 a cup provides around 138 mg)as is fortified soya milk. Try to exclude all carbonated drinks (such as pepsi)from your diet as they contain phosphates which compete with calcium in the body therefore decreasing the amount of calcium your body absorbs. As for supplements, it is best that you get advice from a nutritionist or dietician as supplementing one mineral may compete with other minerals in the body. I hope this helps, Topazblue341 http://health.Nutrition_and_Dietetics_/ , Melissa Hill <assilembob> wrote: > Today I was diagnosed with having a severe iron and > calcium deficency.
