Guest guest
Hello, I haven't actually checked the stores although I was sure I saw a whole bunch left over in front of Longs Drugs (I live in the East Bay - SF Bay Area) but they're probably gone by now. I just picked a pumpkin from my back yard. I still have one more on the vine. I think they both must be about, um, 1 to 1.5 foot tall. Look forward to trying something with them. Guest guest
Shawn - I buy fresh pumpkins every year - I found mine this year only at Kroger (I'm in Texas), and the last ones I bought I had to get out of their organic section. No other stores carried them. Also, they do tend to stop selling them around Halloween. If you have any organic grocers around, you might try those - and you're looking for " American Pie Pumpkins. " The larger ones people use for jack-o-lanterns are not palatable - too stringy. They do keep for some time, so when I buy mine (I've bought a total of 10 this year - I have three on hand) I can keep them around until just before Thanksgiving to make my fresh pies. (So long as someone doesn't want other pumpkiny stuff that uses them all up). Hope this helps! Darn I was hoping they'd sell them for Thanksgiving. > If you have any organic grocers around, you might try those Excellent, hadn't thought of that. Thanks! >- and you're looking for " American Pie Pumpkins. " The larger ones people use for jack-o-lanterns are not palatable - too stringy. Good to know - I'd like to get the bigger one for the seeds and the " American Pie " guy for some type of fresh pumpkiny thing. At the Kroger, I saw a couple of mini cute pumpkins but I figured there wasn't much you could do with them (being so tiny). > They do keep for some time, so when I buy mine (I've bought a total of 10 this year - I have three on hand) I can keep them around until just before Thanksgiving to make my fresh pies. I'm not giving up yet - Gary, is your self raised pumpkin ready to be adopted out? lol Good to hear you've still got the excellent garden goin. Guest guest
You can cut and steam butternut squash and it's very similar to pumpkin and use in a recipe. I've done this several times. They are truly in season now. Enjoy.....Donna matrixenos <matrixenos wrote: I tried 3 different chains of grocery stores this past weekend looking for " a " (wanted a few but would have settled for one) pumpkin, only to find that there wasn't any.
