Things like jubes and those lolly snakes and frogs, they're all made with gelatine. I don't know where to source the proof for you to send to her, but really all she needs to do is look at the ingredients. If she doesn't understand where gelatine comes from, maybe its time she learned I don't know about the salad dressing, though I have heard about bugs being used for colouring in lollies (sweets, sorry, I think you call them sweets in the US:)) so perhaps it is true also. > > This know it all that most 20 somthing Vegetarian are << I'm a 20-something vegetarian (only a couple of months away from that scary figure that starts with a " 3 " though LOL) Regards Louise South Australia DogsBody Hydrobath aussie_bullbreeds/ www.edba.org.au
Guest guest
The dye is called carmine or carmic acid - it comes from the crushed exoskeletons of female cochineal beetles. It is also used in makeup, and sometimes to dye maraschino cherries, and popsicles - here's a link: http://www.cspinet.org/new/carmine_8_24_98.htm there are many others if you search on the terms. Marshmallows are made with gelatin - usually derived from not only hooves, but also skin, tendons, ligaments, etc - http://www.vegsource.com/talk/awakening/messages/18902.html there are however vegan marshmallows available online for $5/bag. Guest guest
Greetings, I am also a 20-something vegetarian, and I do not eat anything with gelatine in it. Which includes marshmallows (unfortunately!)...However, there are veggie marshmallow recipes available on the Net, and I'm glad that they sell vegan marshmallows online (I didn't know that), but since I live in Australia, they're probably not available here...sigh...Also I had no clue about that carmic acid stuff, that's just wrong...I'm gonna have to find out which makeup and foods it goes in and boycott that too! Hopefully, it's not in anything I use or eat... In peace, darquesal
Guest guest
I've read a post before about red coloring in food coming from bugs (I don't want to even get into detail as to what parts of the bug). It really freaked me out at first. I then started reading ingredients to things that were or had red in them (snacks, chips, dressings, etc.) a bit after reading that statement. Many of the occasions I red that the ingredient was annatto. This was awhile back and I'm no professional so keep that in mind. I did see this for annatto on the web. S. Source Annatto color originates from the evergreen shrub Bixa Orellana, named after Francisco de Orellana, historian and botanist for the conquistador Pizarro. The Annatto shrub - also known as the Lipstick Pod Tree - is found throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, India and some parts of Africa. Most of the world's supply comes from Kenya, Peru and Brazil. Other names for Annatto are Achiote, Rocou, Bija and Orlean. , " Louise " <lmfoster@i...> wrote: > > , Ms Bitçh > <iamkitchenwitch@w...> wrote: > > > > some Vegetarian HAVE TOLD ME they do not eat marsh mellows b/c > they are made with goat hoofs and that they do not eat 1000 island > salad dressing b/c they use lady bugs for the coloring.<< > > Hi " Kitchen Witch " (sorry don't know your name) > > Many sweets (including, I suspect, marshmallows) are made with > gelatine, which I believe is sourced from cattle hooves (and maybe > goats as well, I don't know). Guest guest
Marshmallows have gelatin as an ingredient, just like Jello does. Gelatin is made of all kinds of animal stuff you don't want to know about. If you live in the right places, you can find kosher gelatin in the supermarkets (Ko-jel brand) which comes from plant sources, but is really vegetable guns and starches, not gelatin at all. It behaves differently than gelatin, I find it gels faster and solider. I was happy to see that those new 'fruit in gel' things they sell in the canned fruit department are vegetable based, not gelatin. Anyway, finding nongelatin marshmallows, or kosher marshmallows, is tough, even in big cities. Red dye from bugs has been around for a long time, in all kinds of products. In fact, I've never seen it in salad dressing, just other things. Also a lot of cosmetics. Labeled cochineal, from the name of the bug. Used to be used quite a bit more, even just 20 years ago, far as I can see from reading ingredients. Unfortunately, it can also be listed as just 'food coloring' or similar if it's in small enough amounts, so you can't be sure. , Ms Bitçh <iamkitchenwitch@w...> wrote: > > I am having a fight with another Vegetarian in another group. Hain also make a Kosher/vegetarian gel. (Available in Whole Foods - if you have that market locally)

Is this like agar-agar? Or is that a different product altogether? I'd read that agar-agar was a vegetarian gelatin alternative, but I can't remember what it was made from. May have been a marine product?? Regards Louise South Australia DogsBody Hydrobath aussie_bullbreeds/ www.edba.org.au
